Average time to Abiraterone failure?

Does anyone have reliable information as to what the average time is before Abiraterone fails? I know everyone’s experience is different. I’m just curious what the average is.

Hi,

Unfortunately every body reacts to meds differently. For example, I was on Erleada for 5.5 years until I started encountering dizziness. I went on Zytiga for about one month. The S/E were too much for me. It appeared at that time my PSA was quietly climbing. So, my MO deemed that my body had stopped reacting to the new class of anti-androgen meds. I had a good run. So, your body could accept Zytiga for a good amount of time and then work well with another drug in that class.

I'm almost 2 years in and all is well. Can't wait to stop however - July can't come soon enough!

Time to castrate resistance varies a lot. I got just over two years on anti androgens.

I asked my MO the same question last week. I have been on Lucrin(Lupron), Abiraterone (Zytiga) and Prednisone for 1 year now, and my PSA is down to 0.16 from 12, which is the lowest it has every been. My MO says that everyone is different and there is no definitive answer to the question. Could be a year, could be 5.

That’s what I’m starting to realize and that’s really sort of what I expected but I was hoping for a study that dealt with the matter.

I am sorry to say everyone's body and system react different, for a number of reasons. Drs really have no idea for any individual. But I am happy to say my duration should increase your survey average quite a bit. I am 9years 7 months on Zytiga/ abiraterone acetate . It brought my PSA to undetectable, since Aug, 2014 and still going strong.. hang in there, Keep the Faith!

Were you on Lupron or something similar before the Zytiga? And if yes, how long were you on it?

Were you or your doc ever concerned about developing resistance after all that time? Did you take any breaks?

Abiraterone was approved by FDA because the clinical trials proved that abiraterone extends overall survival fo a median of 4 months. It can be much longer for some individuals.

Every treatment what FDA approved extend life for 3 to 4 months.

To answer your question: for my husband Abiraterone worked for 3 years (along with prednisone, eligard and e Xgeva). The side effects were quite tolerable. But his PSA numbers have climbed to 1.9 from .04 in 5 months. And a recent scan has shown 2 lesions in the lower spine. Last week he had a biopsy on the lowest (sacrum) lesion and we await results that should guide us towards the next treatment.

So Abiraterone (Zytiga) seems to have rather variable effectiveness, time wise.

Good luck in your journey.

For me, it’s not that it necessarily failed, but my blood pressure skyrocketed to around 165/130 so I was taken off it and put on Apalutimide instead. Blood pressure went down considerably.
