Has any one had the prostatic sling for male urinary incontinence, if so has it work well for you.

I had a sling inserted at the Cleveland Clinic. It did not reduce incontinence at all. Total waste.

I had a male sling maybe ten years ago now. The surgeon said it wouldn't be perfect, but it would bring me a significant, perhaps 90% improvement in the near total incontinence an RP had left me with. And he was correct. A great help. More than 90%, actually.

I had it a year after RP. It worked well although after IMRT I had some leakage again. After a year later, It has now subsided to nearly nothing unless I have some great exertion like heavy lifting or excessive exercise, I may get a little.

How involved is a surgery like that?

Outpatient surgery. I was a little tired for a day or two, but no big deal. There is an animated video out there showing the procedure.

I had the surgery January 4 of this year (RP was April 4, 2023). Initially after surgery I could not void, and had to wear a catheter for a week. When that was removed, I could pee, and over the next week returned to almost 100% control. I still have a little tenderness in the incisions but it is not even a month after surgery yet. I feel like I got my life back.

It apparently works for 70-80% of people, especially if Kegel exercises have helped reduce the number of pads to 4/day or so. I was lucky and it worked for me.

The success or failure of the sling is dependent on your level of incontinence. Whether it is stress or urge variety, if it is not too severe your chances are good.

The crude assessment tool used is 'number of pads daily'-simplistic but the best they can do I suppose.

I did not lose control completely but I did leak significantly during all waking hours. For that reason I was advised against the sling and chose the implantation of a AUS (artificial urinary sphincter), which is a more invasive procedure but has worked very well for several years now.

Bottom line is, you want the sling your incontinence is not heavy. If it is, it is unlikely to work. Hopefully you know who you are, so to speak. At the end of the day, you are not only the one deciding, you are the only one with the reliable information to do so.

I have not, but one of my friends had success with it several years ago. He was a very avid cyclist and runner, and had stress incontinence while cycling and running. He was very happy with the sling.

I had the sling installed in January 2021. Right away it helped but I was never leak free. Unfortunately, after a year and a half, my incontinence returned worse than it was before the sling. I'm not sure if it is due to the sling failure or the combination of the RP and radiation catching up with me. I am at 5 or 6 full pads now. I have a cystoscopy in a couple of weeks to see what may have happened. I wished I had just had the AUS but I was on the borderline with 2 to 3 pads each day.If you do decide on the sling make sure they leave the catheter in more than a day. Mine was taken out the morning after the surgery. I wasn't able to void the entire day ending up in emergency with systolic blood pressure over 200. They catheterized me and drained over a liter of urine. The catheter stayed in for 3 or 4 days after that. Good luck with your decision.
