You are basically telling me I am immortal...I eat them daily! Like 50-100g per day

Bravo nuts. The article is kind of old though. And the journalist can't be bothered to distinguish between true tree nuts and "drupes" (which are actually fruits - I just looked it up LOL). (Regardless of the age of the article though, it's fantastic to bring up the subject - thanks!)

Almonds, cashews and pistachios are all drupes. I eat them except pistachios because they're too expensive and except cashews is because my wife thinks they are bad in terms of carbohydrates.

Also I once ate so many almonds that I gave myself a kidney stone (almonds have a lot of oxalates). I was eating handfuls multiple times a day. Just excruciating!

As for Brazil nuts they have a bizarrely high level of selenium and if you eat a handful of Brazil nuts you might kill yourself or something.

Walnuts though have urolithins in them! And that's really good against PCa! Walnuts everyday and if we have a bag of almonds I will eat them everyday too.

Go nuts for nuts! 😂

Idkt …. I’ve been drupe duped !!! 😂😂😂

I live smack dab in the middle of where all the pistachios and almonds are commercially grown. I can look out my back patio door and see both almonds and pistachios on neighbors trees. At the end of the block there are 100s of acres of open orchard fields filled with almonds and pistachios ( and stone fruit ) Fresno county grew $8 “ billion “ dollars worth of pistachios last year. 40%+ of all pistachios consumed in the USA last year were grown here in my county, and oddly our biggest money crop is wine grapes, table grapes and raisins. Yayahahahaya yayahahahaya they dwarf the nut trees here.

In “ all this “ I never knew they were drupes. Learn something new every day on the group.

Walnuts are drupes also

I did not know that. Now I'm expecting everyone to say "all nuts are drupes". Live and learn 😂

I have Black Walnut trees in my yard , right now I'm tripping all over them. There a pain to clean to get to the meat of the nuts. The English walnuts typical in the stores are not as good as the Black variety.

JohnInTheMiddle profile image
JohnInTheMiddle in reply to85745

Are black walnuts the kind with the thin and rough dark green skin that squirrels love? And which when you rub your fingernail over it skin it has a really weird and distinctive citrusy smell? There are lots in our neighborhood growing up but we never thought we could eat them.

85745 profile image
85745 in reply toJohnInTheMiddle

Yes, But when they first fall they tend to be lighter side green, as they age they turn dark green to black and crust over on outer shell. that is when you would clean off to harvest the shelled nut to then crack open to access the actual edible nut. The outer part is used to make walnut hull tinctures. Must wear non permeable gloves walnut hulls will stain you hands soap won't clean off. I have so many the red and grey squirrels pile them up like gravel . I need to research a better way to clean them, wow think about it medicine in your own backyard free of charge look up dandolion root for cancer .

I have one reliably productive walnut tree sold to me as an English walnut. It's mother might have been English but there must have been an American Black walnut in the neighborhood. It's fruit has the outside shell of the Black walnut and the inside nutmeat of the plumper English walnut.

What you need is an old cement mixer and buckets of water. Soak the nuts for 24 hours to plump the nutmeats. Tumble the nuts in the mixer with water to remove the husks, rinse with clear water and start cracking. I use a log (of a comfortable height when sitting) set on one end and put a solid brick on top as the anvil and sit on my back porch chair to hammer away the shells, keeping a bent paper clip handy for digging out the smaller bits. I freeze the nuts to preserve their sweetness.

Thanks, sounds easy enough.

Wow this is fantastic information about black walnuts. As children we noticed how much squirrels like them. And they had that weird smell sort of like citrus or something but not quite. And then when they actually turned black from the pretty green we thought they were sort of evil. And when we cracked them open it didn't look like something healthy. So we just thought they were a mistake by heaven or evolution, however you hold 😃

I read Blk walnuts good to eat for prostate cancer. also Dandelion roots . A few hickory nuts and acorns , all good

Which reminds me of the punchline:

Probably good to wash down all those acorns and dandelion roots.

After being diagnosed with advanced McCarthy in Nov 2016 with psa of 9000 and advised I may not live into 2020 I was put on ADT as per my profile. My psa dropped father 4 months to negligible and my cancer in glands resolved an metastases in bones became less visible. I started eating 30 apricot kernels (in spite of warnings) every morning as soon as I was diagnosed. I continued for 9 months until I didn’t feel it was necessary. I don’t know whether it helped or not but it didn’t do any observable harm. For the last 5 years I have had a good Qol. If you considered 8 hrs uninterrupted sleep a night and no leakage and no pains ok. I am now 83 and consider myself both mentally and physically active. A far cry from when diagnosed waking every 2 hours to pee and often wetting the bed.

Any diagnosis of cancer is a gut wrencher, half expected though due to family history, watched my dad die from advanced pc, so casual lack of concern couldn't be farther from the truth

Derf4223 profile image
Derf4223 in reply topd63

My dad _had_ PCa when he died, as did his 3 brothers. It is not clear if they all died from something else as at least one had horrible back pain near the end. Sorry about your dad.

Dismissing my post as "that old chestnut" was probably intended in humor.

We didn't choose the Hydra. The Hydra chose us.

A handful of soaked Walnuts, and handful of soaked Almonds daily.

Soaking to soften the nuts remove tannins, and remove Almond skins.

Thanks for sharing. Consider also impact of diet:

Interesting article, thanks.

Of particular interest, to me at least, is this section of the article which says:

"Increasing evidence suggests that insulin resistance, a condition in which the cells of the body become resistant to the hormone insulin, is involved in prostate cancer risk and progression.

Tree nuts have been associated with improved insulin sensitivity and reduced risk of diabetes, cardiovascular disease and total mortality."

***

The above might lend credibility to the theories that being on a keto diet or doing fasting can help against cancer as both of these are key factors in improving insulin sensitivity and even getting rid of diabetes which was once thought to be an incurable always progressing disease.

JohnInTheMiddle profile image
JohnInTheMiddle in reply toMascouche

Okay fantastic comment on the possibility that keto and fasting might contribute to suppressing prostate cancer, even metastatic prostate cancer.

The suppression mechanisms are apparently associated with metabolism and insulin and glucose. I'm semi-committed to these things.

However, we're seeing a lot of research and opinions that a plant-based diet is the best diet against PCa.

And if one pursues this then stays away from meat and animal proteins.

It's hard to square keto and fasting against the plant diet with no meat cheese and eggs.

Any ideas on squaring the circle?

Slowdancing profile image
Slowdancing in reply toJohnInTheMiddle

Why not both? can't meat/cheese/eggs be replaced by soy protein / nuts, and still be Keto? And if you need more fat (to replace the sugar/carbs), nuts/avocados are a great alternative.

85745 profile image
85745 in reply toJohnInTheMiddle

I think plant based , but stay away from carb veggy like beans potatoes etc. I eat salmon , sardines, haddock, few shrimp etc ground lean chicken breast patties. Egg yolk bad due to choline, ok so I eat egg whites that have zero choline.and avocados. once a month I eat a hamburger patty. No breads strive for zero carbs. Lots of homemade tomato soup. And Almond butter, Blk walnuts . Cruciferous vegetables every day steam cooked and uncooked. Homemade med hot pepper sauce.1 caffiene 5 cups decaf coffee a day. I need to get back to fastings again . Liposomal Fisetin , Lipo Apigenin and Luteolin just to name a few. one day I'l post a list of all my supps. It's crazy. lol

Mascouche profile image
Mascouche in reply toJohnInTheMiddle

Plant proteins do not convert into as many amino acids that meat proteins do. Maybe you you could a little compromise with something like the pescatarian diet which is pretty much vegan plus some fish.

in reply toMascouche

Its the amount of insulin used to overcome resistance that is the key.

ADT causes metabolic syndrome which insulin resistance is included.

So in a nutshell ADT is contributing to PCa

Never heard/read this before but in a like vein, I remember that Steve McQueen went to Mexico to have some treatment with apricot pits. Needless to say it didn't work. Others have gone to Europe for some treatment (I think transfusions) with the blood of lambs/sheep. We'd all like to find a simple miracle but I think it's a complicated journey that needs the assistance of experts in real medical science, even if it's just to manage pain and symptoms at the end.

Roscoaus2000 profile image
Roscoaus2000 in reply toShamrock46

I don’t know if they work. But I went straight onto ADT as I had psa 9000 and metastases throughout skeleton and lymph nodes near prostate. I had no prior treatment as I refused any 11 years before, opting to wait until I had symptoms. Straight on to ADT and advised it could slow down progression. In 4 months psa was <0.05 and lymph nodes resolved and bone metastases less prominent. Oncologist amazed at recovery and put it down to my healthy lifestyle. Upon diagnosis I started building up to 30 apricot Kernels a day (despite advice not to). I did this for 9 months until I decided I didn’t need it any more. Nearly 7 years later my psa has just started to rise (0.16 to 0.35 over 18 months. It is probably a coincidence but they certainly haven’t done me any harm in contradiction to warnings on packaging Not to be taken internally. Incidentally I fell and broke 3 ribs recently an the CT scan observed there is indication of healed metastases on the ribs. They took 8-10 weeks to heal.

I love nuts too, true nuts or not. I’m guessing peanuts aren’t true tree nuts either. Sadly my dental hygienist informed me that almonds break teeth because they are so hard. She wants me to cut them up before chewing. The dentist chimed in that 20% of his business is from broken teeth. If I didn’t have enough to worry about.

I used to put almonds (and fresh spinach) in my Nutribullet drink three times a week. Gave me kidney stones due to the really high oxalates in both. My wife’s nephrologist said, “Don’t ever do that again!”
