hello, my dad completed his second (of six) rounds of docetaxel last Monday the 31 and starting around Wednesday or Thursday of last week began experiencing severe burning in his feet. He states they are very tender, red, and describes it as feeling like they have been sunburned. He is having difficulty putting any pressure on them and walking and has had to take hydrocodone just to be able to get up and around. I have been reading about CIPN which it appears is what this is but has anyone else experienced it to this extreme? He is going to meet with his MO this morning for follow-up, thank you all for any input
docetaxel side effects : hello, my dad... - Advanced Prostate...
docetaxel side effects
This is probably neuropathy, a common side effect of a chemo.
Neurontin might help. He can try an ice pack under his feet during the next infusion.
I recently finished 6 rounds of docetaxel and have some peripheral neuropathy in hands and feet, though not as bad as you describe. Used ice packs for hands and feet - maybe would be worse if didn't. My MO recommended vit. B6 100mg 3x a day. I'm also doing acupuncture, which seems to help.
Most probable a peripheral neuropathy. Gabapentin up to 3 grams a day is usually useful in controlling the symptoms. If he has this severe type of neuropathy they may need to reduce the dose of chemo in the next infusion and see what happens.
If he continues with severe symptoms they may need to stop the infusions.
Peripheral neuropathy because of chemo is usually a sensorial neuropathy but it can evolve to motor neuropathy which could be debilitating.
If he continuous with severe symptoms he could consider to consult with a doctor specialized in pain (pain clinic). They have some specific treatments for these symptoms besides the gabapentin.
Some info about chemo for PC from an expert:
it’s behind a paywall in The Times ( UK) from last Saturday ( free month I believe)
Relief for cancer patients is being frozen out

I had ice slippers and gloves for my Docetaxel as per norm in Finland. In UK I see guys every month getting chemo with no ice in sight
I also fastedfor 2/3 I couldn’t for 3rd due to timing and that time I did vomit. No neuropathy though
thank you all for the responses, his MO seemed to think it was a kind of allergic reaction to the chemo due to the extremely red/sunburned appearance of his feet and the tenderness going along with it…..she started him on a steroid taper so I’m hoping that is what it is and it resolves in the next several days. She said she will reduce the dose of his next round of the docetaxel. I had not even considered that until she mentioned it, I was thinking CIPN as well
hi, my husband is currently on round 5 and has suffered this each round. his tends to be worse in bed so we bought a dog cooling gel pad, he finds it works a treat for him
