Covid & PCa Diagnosis in England 2020 v. 2019

New full text paper below [1].

Each country responded differently to covid in terms of lockdowns, etc.

In England (not Britain), the statistics could only gladden the hearts of the USPSTF.

There was a 10,000 deficit in the number of new cases, and "a ‘surgical deficit’ was created of just under 1500 men by the end of December 2020" and "a ‘radiotherapy deficit’ of 1500 men by December 2020."

"Men diagnosed in 2020 were typically at a more advanced stage (Stage IV: 21.2% vs 17.4% ...)" {Surely a percentage increase was to be expected with low-risk men skipping screening? (I didn't see absolute numbers.) But, going forward, one might expect an increase in advanced cases.

Sweden had more of a laissez faire approach in 2020 (låt det vara?) & it would be interesting to see Swedish PCa stats.

But isn't sweeden also less populated? Is there pca rate comparable? What country has the lowest rates of pca prior to covid? How many got leukemia post vaccination or had cancer advance or regress? Oh so many questions lol

Sweden ranked 7th in the world for PCa in 2018: 103/100,00 (age adjusted).

Ireland was 3rd at 132.5 !!! & the UK was 16th at 80.7

Sweden has less than a fith of the population of England. During the year (2019), 10,984 (Swedish) men were diagnosed with prostate cancer and 2,200 men died from it."

This is not good news. My experience has been that if you have already been diagnosed the on going treatment has been pretty good despite the problems. I wonder whether this too will come under pressure as the backlog of cases and more advanced cases need to be addressed.

Not good news but thank you for posting Patrick. I am one of the statistics sadly. Diagnosed Advanced in May 2020 from England and prescribed Enzalutamide (interestingly in Scotland patients were put on Zytiga). I made contact with a guy, Stuart, who was diagnosed way to late in May 20 because he couldn't see his General Practitioner in March and he has sadly passed already aged 50.The take home message for everyone in the UK and I suspect worldwide is, if any signs, get into see your GP. Spread the word in your friendship and family groups.

Thanks for the report. Very interesting but difficuilt to measure the damage. My husband was a victim in that he was scheduled for NIH PSMA scan almost two years ago. First they called to say they were prioritizing Covid. Then they notified us he was off the list due to a change in policy allowing only those enrolled in NIH trials to receive the scan. So we are two years behind.
