Chondroitin Sulfate is found in some joint supplements . . . Be Careful

As mentioned on another thread by George Glass, one should be careful with joint supplements which contain chondroitin sulfate. Dr. Myers was one of the first to observe possible negative effects for those with prostrate cancer. See reference below.

Have you made public your "do not use list"? Just wondering what else I should exclude. If ice cream is on that list then don't reply. :)

Do you always choose sugar free products?

#1 Pharmacist Recommended Brand. Osteo Bi-Flex . Chondroitin Sulfate listed with MSM Complex. My daughter just got me some from Costco. Guess I will just give it back to her husband. My old aches and pains will just do without that supplement. Pain is good, it tells you that you are still alive... Ouch....

I tried ro warn someone off chondroitin recently, but failed to find Dr. Myers vlog post on the subject. My warning was politely rejected.

I thought that PubMed papers might muddy the issue. There over 100 of them, but here are the dozen that have chondroitin in the title. Make of them what you will. LOL

Hey Nalakrats!

I use Sun Warrior Collagen Building Protein Peptides with Hyaluronic acid and a little MSM powder in a drink. It is a vegan powder mostly from plants.

Before becoming a vegan I ate chicken cartilage and took some supplements. Soups once started by simmering a chicken carcass and a stew by simmering bones. Steve Reeves ate a couple packets of Knox Gelatin a day. My grandfather who was a master carpenter never owned a power saw. They used heavy wooden ladders. He never had joint problems other than back alignments at a chiropractor.

I agree with the comments from Nal. I did the research and saw all the studies as well. Glucosamine Sulfate - good, MSM might be good, hyaluronic acid bad, collagen - good and bad.

Back in the late 90's our Newfoundland developed the so common with big dogs hip dysplasia. The vet prescribed Glucosamine/Chondroitin combo from a veterinary pharmacy. It did not help with our Newfie's hip pain.

At one point I told the Vet Dr. that I was looking to buy the Gluco/Chondroitin from Walgreens or Walmart since it was cheaper. She said it was unreliable. Only the tested version from the vet pharmacy was guaranteed pure.

Not so, Cosamin DS is the exact same formula as Cosaquin. Both are made by Nutramax Labs. Cosamin DS is only available at stores with pharmacies. There has been decades of anecdotal evidence that Cosaquine has been beneficial for horses. I have given to all of my performance competition dogs. I have taken Cosamin for 30 years after learning about it from my vet. The pharmacy version is the same as the veterinary version. Neither is recognized by the FDA. It is very expensive to obtain a pharmaceutical label and would then require a Doctors orders for its use. I have always been athletically active and have been fortunate not to have any joint issues. Prostate cancer is another sad issue that was a complete surprise to me.

You know what I do ? Put my trust in my doctors, they studied for years to become specialists and certainly know a lot more than that guy with a white coat on YouTube .. So far it helped me stay alive for 7 years with stage IV mcrpc .

Hey NalI try to watch my diet BUT a little bowl of premium ice cream every couple days is my weakness. I figure that QOL has to be factored in and we are all only going around this life one time

Appreciate your helpful and knowledgable comments. I alway look forward to them.

Do physicians in the Netherlands get training in nutrition, vitamins and supplements? Unfortunately, US doctors are lucky to have even couple of classes in these areas. I believe in Ronald Reagan’s maxim “Trust but Verify”especially since my life is on the line. Great that you are still fighting the good battle after 7 years. I wish you continued good luck 👍
