Pain in bones and fever

Hello everyone

My father has stopped medicine for cancer since 15 days after he developed allergic rashes to honvan

For the past one week he is getting pain in his lower back and he experiences mildly elevated body temperature(around 1degree Fahrenheit) almost everyday.

His wbc and platelets are in range and Hb is 8.2.

His serum phosphate level was 0.7 which is considered low

What could be the reasons of fever?

Did he take an antihistamine? Did he recently have a covid-19 vaccine?

Yes he took levocetrizine for 10 days with helped with the allergic skin rashes. His took vaccine a month ago

Can bone pain cause fever?

Purely anecdotally, I've seen 2 other men who have had autoimmune reactions to ADT shots shortly after receiving Covid-19 vaccinations. He may want to stay on daily antihistamines for a while. I would suspect that an autoimmune reaction is causing boih the joint aches and the fever.

I shall discuss this with th MO today

I had my Covid 19 booster( 3rd shot) and Zoladex and Xgeva the same day as well as a CT and a bone scan. This gave me severe bone pain everywhere but no fever. 2 days later I was give Cabazytaxel, prednisone, dextramethazone, Benadryl IV together and lapelga 24 hrs later. The pain abated in 2-3 days. Still no fever but nausea, vomiting and diarrhea which is still with me 2 weeks later! They say it’s not the booster but I wonder. My cousin had his hemoglobin knocked out with only the 2nd Covid shot, couldn’t walk and was hospitalized for 5 days.I found it hard to walk too. I am on prednisone 10mg a day.

Immunotherapy probably stuck me with colitis (Keytruda) for life.

I recall reading 3 pts with liver cancer passed away after the booster ( on this site?)

Waiting for MRI report from last week!

Hi Vsahay. My father also has daily fevers. His fevers also come with whole body bone pain. He also had similar blood markers.

Usually fevers mean there is an infection. In my dads case, he spent 1 month in the hospital while they tried to find a cause for the fever. However in the end, they couldn’t find anything. It is concluded that the fever is related to the cancer. His inflammatory markers (ferritin, ESR CRP etc) were very high.

We found that Tylenol does not help the fevers. Naproxen seems to work best. It is an anti-inflammatory. We give it to him every 12 hours to prevent fever spikes. I would be happy to message you with more details.

Your father should be tested for any infection or virus. If they are unable to find anything, it could be a neoplastic fever.

I also had this when I was first diagnosed and not yet under treatment. I had high inflammation numbers for CRP and ESR. I was able to take Ibuprofen to get the fever down, but then I would have drenching night sweats every night and wake up soaking wet with wet sheets, pillowcase, etc.

I’m sorry you dealt struggled with that. Ibuprofen is good as well. Both ibuprofen and naproxen are NSAIDs. The benefit of naproxen is that it stays in your system longer.

Ok.I will keep that in mind

There is something called the "Naproxen Challenge".

I'm going to tuck this under Gregg's reply because I think it may apply more to situations like his than your Dad's, i.e. it's more something to keep in mind if other possibilities don't seem to be the answer...but it does fit with the fever=likely infection. If there is any reasonable pathway your Dad could have contracted Hepatitis C, be aware that it can show symptoms like this (mild fever with drenching night sweats and high inflammatory markers). A blood test can determine if it is present. (It can be chronic). My Dad had both prostate cancer and Hep C.

Sending some extra healing thoughts out to you and your Father!

I do feel that this is related to the cancer because I had it for over a month and it went away completely as soon as I started treatment. I can't believe that was a coincidence.

Here's one article on the subject but you can find more in a search.

Can prostate cancer cause a fever:

Metastatic prostate cancer can have an initial presentation with fever and systemic inflammatory response syndrome. Accurate diagnosis allows to differentiate this type of cancer from infectious conditions and to start early treatment

My father had been diagnosed 8 years ago.Is it still possible to get fevers due to cancer? His disease is progressive and he is currently not on any treatment for cancer(for past 15-20days)

Gregg, if you don't mind, I'm curious - did your temperature come completely back to whatever it normally was, or did/do you notice you have any kind of consistent slight elevation (if you happen to keep records/check it).

It came down to normal if I took an NSAID and that would also help with the pain. My temp was never elevated a lot. It seemed to be almost normal in the morning and steadily got worse as the day went on. The problem was that taking Ibuprofen would get the fever down, but then I would have terrible night sweats and wake up soaking wet every morning. So it was either fever or night sweats. The whole thing was crazy, I kept thinking it was some kind of infection or autoimmune disease. The inflammation numbers were very high, but the problem is tests like ESR and CRP are non-specicific. I suspect that at some point when I run out of treatments, this will return as my cancer progresses.

Thanks, Gregg. That's interesting. I'm sure that it is indicative of some connection/interaction. My Dad's fever stayed essentially the same all day, but was consistently slightly elevated. Like you, he never spiked a super-high fever. He had the drenching night sweats as well and the similar high systemic inflammation numbers. His ferritin level also went very high, but he didn't have a STFR test until fairly late in the process -I don't know why. Like you, he thought it might be (and, in fact, he was initially diagnosed with) an auto-immune disease. In his case, it seems like the liver damage caused by the Hep C is likely what predisposed his body to the PCA. But, the body can be so complex in its reactions/symptoms. With cancer's close connection to the immune system, I suppose it isn't at all surprising that it could appear to act like an auto-immune disease. There is probably some elegant explanation for all this which we don't know yet.

As always, very best wishes to you! Sending good thoughts and energy your way, too!

You're welcome. I'm not sure it's a whole lot of help, but then also, sometimes having another pathway to pursue is of benefit, or just an idea that gets you thinking from a different angle. Sending love and light to you and your Dad and wishes that you find the answers you need and in time.

Hi,What blood test that confirmed hep C? Thanks

It's the HCV antibody test that determines the presence of the virus.

Did it get better after treatment? My father is about to start chemo. Would the fever be a cause of delay in his treatment?

in reply toVsahay

Mine went away after treatment started, but I have read that it can come back when there is progression.

Fever without obvious cause may be related to a very large number of medical situations. You need to consult with an internal medicine doctor who could do a complete workup to see if they can determine the cause, The rest of the opinions are just opinions and it will not solve the situation of your father.
