Slow recovery from general anesthesia…PC/ADT related?

I’m home recovering from bladder stone surgery…it’s been three days now and I’m just not bouncing back. Fatigued, dizziness and a bit nauseous. I didn’t have this in my previous prostate cancer, kidney stone or spinal surgeries. Has anyone else experienced this? I do worry a bit about the cumulative effects of anesthesia as I’ve had six surgeries since 2015. Some of us have all the fun. ;-) Also wondering if my now taking Lupron and Zytiga/prednisone might be a factor. Best to all!

Repeated use of general anesthesia can have increasing side effects especially in older patients.

Thanks, Magnus. I’d seen that as well. I’m having a hard time admitting that I’m in a new classification…older, elderly, etc. But I was excited to now qualify for my lifetime US National Park passcard! There’s some benefits to being a senior!

The greatest cause of injury in the elderly is not admitting to yourself that you're old.

DANG, u b a young whippersnapper. 😃

In 2015 @ almost 65 I was under a general for 3+ hours for my 2nd PCa visit to the O.R. A good bicycling buddy was there assisting my DR. and after surgery he came to the recovery room to check up on me. The next time we were bicycling together he asked if I had any recollection of him being there to which I answered "NOPE." He laughed and said he kind of expected that because he was talking to me and I was saying "THE DUMMEST THINGS IN RESPONSE." Thankfully I never had SE's for that experience or ones before or since.

Everyone reacts differently with some having extremely poor results. My FIL was one who had bad results following his heart bypasses. Just talking with a neighbor a couple hours ago and she said that following her double knee replacement she had a "not too severe reaction" but enough that she never wanted to go under again.

Anesthesia is such a weird thing! You really are putting your life into the hand of the anesthesiologist who is inducing you into a coma…and you’re hoping that you wake up! It took me a little longer immediately after the surgery before being sent home and I wonder if she turned it up a bit strong this time.

And I love my new national Park pass! It’s going to get a LOT of use over the next few decades! 😉

Everybody seems to act differently on these anti-antigens I was on lupron for a few months I couldn't tolerate the side effects so I went on fermigan I'm having good success with fermigan except for the severe pain in my stomach when I get the injection that lasts a couple days but overall I feel a lot better than I did on lupron put me in hell but I'm doing better now and all I can suggest is that you may need to get on another type of anti-antigon you need to discuss that with your oncologist

Thanks! It’s interesting how we all can react differently. Other than hot flashes I’ve tolerated it well. Same with the gabapentin I take for spinal test compression…some people hate it but I can’t live without it!

Just wondering why injection in the stomach? i have had two Lupron injections in the buttocks and no problem at all.

Same with me…alternating butt cheeks.

Benn there--13 surgeries in 13 years, some with general, some without. It takes as long as you're describing for me to "bounce back" (no bouncing at all, actually), and the anesthesia can affect your sleep patterns, too, which makes the fatigue harder to shake. If your worried about anything unusual (for you) call or message the surgeon's office (you'll get a response from a nurse or a PA) and let them know, but you're well within the parameters of the experiences I've had. Good luck!

Thanks Jim! Today’s day four and so far I’m feeling more ‘normal’. I give myself permission for another lazy day! 😉

Next time refuse the anesthesia and show them your lifetime US National Park passcard instead. Kill two birds with one passcard.........
