Obviously from JPnSD's recent post it appears that many/most of you believe in the vaccines. Up until April of this year Thailand was doing great in comparison to most of the world; however, just recently new infections are averaging 20,000/day with 250 to 300 deaths. Very few people were vaccinated prior to this outbreak and now there is a push to get everyone vaccinated despite the large number of folks who are nonbelievers. Over 700 healthcare workers who were vaccinated with the Sinovac jabs developed the virus and now we are adding one to two doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine to everyone who received the Sinovac shots. As of today I am still somewhat reluctant to subject myself to the shots mostly due to all of the negative articles that I have been reading. After all, these vaccines were developed in a small fraction of the time that it took to develop most other vaccines.
We now have all of the other vaccines available and I would really appreciate some comments/recommendations (both pros and cons) regarding my dilemma.
Thanking you in advance,
Ron

We just need to get used to this virus is about what it appears to amount to. And get on with our business. So much lost time that could be devoted to cancer research.
I cannot comment on the efficacy or dangers of the various vaccine options (like Sinovac, which obviously has less than ideal effectiveness), but would suggest it is far less important to consider how well a vaccine prevents getting a non-lethal case of COVID relative to considering how well a vaccine prevents DYING from lethal COVID as new variants emerge.
There is no doubt that some will suffer adverse effects from certain vaccines. The question is, what is the relative likelihood of severe side effects versus the potential for contracting a serious and potentially lethal case of COVID as an unvaccinated individual?
To me, it is not that different than considering options to treat PC. I assume better odds for myself WITH vaccine rather than without, just as I assume better odds with ADT rather than without.
I understand the concern with taking experimental meds. Understanding mRNA vaccines, and any potential dangers they have, is way above my pay grade. But talking to some who do understand them better, and reading a bit about them, has left me feeling pretty secure in thinking my two Moderna doses were the right choice.
"Obviously from JPnSD's recent post it appears that many/most of you believe in the vaccines."
I believe in science and it's very clear: Over 99% percent of those dying from Covid are unvaccinated. It's time to put away "beliefs" and follow the science.
It's not really a "belief" in science, is it? It's a matter of seeing the data, making an informed decision together with the guidance of experts in the field.
I suspect there are people whose belief system includes science, and is therefore more similar to religion.
This might seem like nitpicking, but I don't believe (or think) it is.
Science is NOT like religion. "Science" is--in that it is a faith-based belief handed down from a "higher authority"--as opposed to something that is tested and has sufficient evidence to demonstrate that the concept is in fact the case.
The point of my post last year is that the vaccines work. It's not a belief--it's a demonstrable fact. One would hope the RCTs on clinicatrials.gov are well-designed and carried out without bias. Not all of them are, of course. But as far as mRNA technology, I think we know it works.
I’m with you Ronron ! Retired living more or less rurally we were already socially isolated before covid due to dx.. I’m waiting to see. Wife is against the vaccs .. I am thinking that covid will keep morphing with new variants for untold years to come. So after initial vaccines one will need yearly if not more boosters . Covid 23 is coming. Nobody knows what they’re doing. This was created by man in a lab to kill us all? CCP bastards funding by the USA. I’m mad that we can’t come see you until it gets better. God bless you brother. Lord have mercy on Asia now . 🙏
Social pressures to vaccinate are big. The truth is that one third of Americans won’t do it .. this devil could be thinning the herds for years . Our young female Thai friend returned after spending six weeks there even visiting her mom in the hospital. She is not vaccinated . Her father in law here Ron Sr. Passed after months of hospitals after getting his second vacc . He told his wife that he’d divorce her if she didn’t get it with him . He had ms . The covid vaccine killed him . Otherwise he was in ok condition . He was 80 ..Very sad .. take care
"Either the AstraZeneca vaccine or mRNA-type vaccines will be given to the estimated 3.4 million people in Thailand who were administered the Sinovac brand. Booster doses have already been given to medical and frontline workers who received the Chinese vaccine."
Eric Clapton says that he can not play the guitar anymore after getting vaccinated ..
Just a kindly correction to what you said. These are the words from Eric Clapton's mouth. Also he had already had neuropathy prior to vaccination.
He is able to play as I had thought. Odd fellow Eric. Great musician, guitarist, music that I will always seek but yea...he's anti lockdown, anti mask, anti vaccination. I don't know what he's thinking other than herd immunity I guess.
I had not been to a concert in years. Saw Eric Clapton guitar festival in Chicago in 2010 ( only a half hour drive for me then ). The talent and experience there was immense and really a huge pleasure. Noon to Midnight music.
Here is the quote from him:
"“I took the first jab of AZ and straight away had severe reactions which lasted ten days. I recovered eventually and was told it would be twelve weeks before the second one…,” Clapton wrote.
“About six weeks later I was offered and took the second AZ shot, but with a little more knowledge of the dangers. Needless to say the reactions were disastrous, my hands and feet were either frozen, numb or burning, and pretty much useless for two weeks, I feared I would never play again, (I suffer with peripheral neuropathy and should never have gone near the needle.) "
Here are common SE's of the vaccine he got:
" For the AstraZeneca shot that Clapton took, fatigue, chills, headache, and joint pain are “very common,” according to the MHRA. These reactions are the standard immune response."
yaaaa maaahn. No worries. Don't tell him I said this but I think poor Eric has been getting grouchy the last few years. Ha.
Your neuropathy I sympathize. I wish you some relief. I hope that rib is feeling better.
From Chemo a bit of neuropathy in my finger tips. Need chop sticks (hashii) to grab toast from toaster etc.. Doesn't help that I have baby skin now. Lost all my callouses. No more hard labor contributes too. ha.
Someone in a thread ( Kaliber ? ) described my foot neuropathy to a Tee.
Feels like I am walking in shoes filled with sand.
I don't have any connection between my feet and the ground. Somehow used to it. New normal I guess. Yep.
Thanks , the rib never really hurt . Lucky me .. just thought it just another random pain . I inherited the joints from mom and pc from dad . I blame no t and adt for much . I feel that everything that we might inherit is amplified .. I have paper thin skin now with oddities and blotches looks like an antiqued leather bag . Whatever those liver spot things on the hands are gross . My skin is like an old goat . The prices we pay ? I had minor pains prior dx .. but now it is the joints that Slo my roll . Still , compared to many other men here , I’m not that bad . I relate to those “ shoes full of sand “ , I feel my hands and feet on fire sometimes ( at night) or feeling like they are dipped in wax . My ct joints are ate up in my shoulders along with every other joint . My arms go numb at night and painful thumb tendons flame up . For a few days I’ve put dmso topical cream with a great effect so far . Before sleep was getting racked with pain . Waking up is ruff after a night of pain . It’s a total break down .which joint ? All of them . I lost to sarcopenia all of my muscle then the tendons ligaments and joints depleted.. beside that I’m alright . Thank you brother .. 💪✌️
She said that she couldn’t bring any back on the plane? We don’t believe her .E-2 I’d love to do . I’d even consider high t therapy if I had money to find the right doc . My joints are failing .. 🙏❤️
AND I got my 3rd BIG MO injection on Tuesday and now I can't play the piano 🎹 BUTT I'm heading out for a FULL MOON overnight 100 mile bicycle ride in 10 minutes.
OH, BTW, never learned how to play the piano anyway. 😀
🤣 Back in 1960 when I was 17, inspired by Bo Diddley, I wanted to learn how to play the guitar so I bought a Gretsch guitar which was what he played. Took three lessons and gave it up due to lack of rhythm. About 25 years ago my son and daughter (both accidents of the rhythm method) were visiting me in Dallas and one night while we were dancing on the swim platform of my boat I fell into the lake with my phone, beeper, and wallet. As I was climbing back onto the boat (kids laughing their heads off) I exclaimed, "Boy, do I have rhythm!" My son said, "Dad, if you had any rhythm Lisa and I wouldn't be here!"
Had my 1st Pfizer shot early April. 4 days later I had an episode of vertigo (bppv) to be exact.
Coincidental or perhaps it was related to the fact that I tapered off Z & p in January?? Haven't had a recurrence.
However, I met a young lady (Covid screener) in her late 20's and she suffered from bppv 2 weeks after her 1st P shot. Coincidental?
2nd shot late April and my next monthly blood draw (10 days later), my renal panel was a mess! Too much Aleve (thank you DMSO) or lack of proper hydration when I was drawn? Or could be another se from vacc?
Had a blood retest 3 weeks later and renal was normal.
Bottom line: I'm not anti vacc and would do it again.
I think about covid as being like the flu on steroids. A different strain comes around every year originating somewhere in East Asia (Hunan anyone) The vaccine makers have to make an informed guess what it will be. I don't know what the FDA 's role is but I doubt they expect compete trials. I got really sick once, in bed for 3 weeks. Comes along covid. More lethal than flu, although some people die from the flu. After my bad bout with the flu I get a flu shot every year. In like manner people with Covid promise to get vaccinated but then they die. By using masks and vaccinations last year we didn't have a flu season last year. The flu might kill you but covid will kill you and several thousand more as well. We don't make the flu vaccination a big deal. A covid vaccination, could have saved us from having to go through all the s..t we now face. The flu shot has not been politicized. The covic shot should not have been. In my view if we had treated covid a bit like the flu on steroids perhaps their wouldn't have been so much controversy about it and we'd be back to normal nowGet the shot.
When a vaccine became available, we got the Moderna one immediately. We had a small adverse reaction at the injection site after the second shot, but that disappeared quickly. Yesterday, we got the third Moderna booster. Like the annual flu shot, I suspect we’ll be getting a variation of the Covid vaccine every year until PCa or heart disease kills us.
I’d read a couple of lengthy articles in the NYer or Atlantic six or seven months ago about the researchers and scientists who had been working to develop the vaccines for a dozen years, and I was impressed by their work ethic. I decided to go with the Moderna vaccine.
Hope you’re doing well. I just had quintuple coronary by-pass surgery in Boston a month ago, and that kicked the shit outta me. Slowly, I’m crawling back to life. Stay clear of viruses, my friend. Problem is; the little bugs are hard to see coming for you. I’d get a vaccine, wear a mask, and stay away from crowds and dumb-asses.
Thank you Jeff for your informative reply. Sorry to hear about your by-pass surgery...wishing you a speedy recovery! I'm trying to stay away from the turkeys and soar with the eagles.
I'm a little confused... the article says "there were 15 deaths in the vaccine group and 14 deaths in the unvaccinated placebo group [which means] more vaccinated people died from the virus than the unvaccinated."
But further down, when listing cause of death, we read that two unvaccinated people died of COVID and zero vaccinated people died of COVID. This means more unvaccinated people died from the virus than the vaccinated.
Ron, as I replied above, the article says "there were 15 deaths in the vaccine group and 14 deaths in the unvaccinated placebo group [which means] more vaccinated people died from the virus than the unvaccinated." Then, when listing cause of death, it notes two unvaccinated people died of COVID and zero vaccinated people died of COVID, meaning the opposite of what was claimed by the author: more unvaccinated people died from the virus than vaccinated.
