Friend with newly found BRCA2 gene. Previously diagnosed with metastasis to bone marrow. 3 chemo treatments and Eligard. PSA now at 257 from high in the 900's. Blood work improving. Doctor wants to use Lynparza, but insurance won't cover. Suggestions for treatment and dealing with insurance company appreciated,

Lynparza is approved for patients with mCRPC and BRCA mutations.

I don’t really have any suggestions for insurance, except that we’ve had a few things approved once insurance received more documentation. My husband has BRCA2, and he’s on Rucaparib (another type of PARP inhibitor). He gets it as part of a study that paired it with 4 rounds of chemo prior to starting the Rucaparib. We were told that if he wants to go off of the study, insurance “should” cover it since it’s FDA approved in the USA.

Thanks. I have encouraged him to appeal. Wishing your husband great results from the study.

My husband took it back in May 2018 where I wrestled with the company who made it to get it for free and we did. Unfortunately, my husband had years of other therapies behind him, but Lynparza caused major issues for him, including losing his sense of taste and smell. This certainly was his own issue as we are not sure if this happens to others. I hope that your friend gets this and that he has great success with it. My best to you. Even when things are FDA approved like the PSMA, I am having to appeal for insurance coverage or it is all out of pocket.

The PARP inhibitor should be covered with the BRCA abnormality. Would ask the MO to appeal. Unfortunately many times the insurer will just automatically deny hoping that the appeal would not be done. The insurer likely paid fo the Gene test, they should pay for the indicated drugs found from the testing
