"Melatonin was prescribed in tablet form, in a dosage of 3 mg, to be taken 30 minutes before sleep daily. "Patients did not receive melatonin during the winter season (December-February). It is well known that in the winter season the melatonin level is at its maximum and in the spring–summer season the melatonin level is at its minimum".

A bit different than the 20 mg & up used in some cancer studies.

Here is a meta-analysis from 2012:

"The search strategy identified 8 eligible RCTs (n = 761), all of which studied solid tumor cancers. The dosage of melatonin used in the 8 included RCTs was 20 mg orally, once a day.

"Melatonin as an adjuvant therapy for cancer led to substantial improvements in tumor remission, 1-year survival, and alleviation of radiochemotherapy-related side effects."

Well, LOL, it wasn't well known by me! Somehow I missed that detail in reading about melatonin.

I have tried various doses, and various timings, but the stuff seems to disturb my sleep rather than enhance it, regardless of the season.

I wouldn't be surprised, though, if those seasonal variations in melatonin go along with other seasonal hormonal changes that play a role in seasonal mood disorders and perhaps even in seasonal changes in the "natural" rate of PC or PSA progression.

Your comment on about it NOT helping with your sleep is not that unusual - because it is NOT a sleep enhancer - it acts differently - in your circadian clock cycle - as a precursor - it also causes some vivid dreams for some - I participated in a sleep / insomnia 'clinic' and the doctor asked us to STOP using melatonin - for a bunch of reasons.

I'm a hardcore insomniac and have found relief WITH melatonin and a STACK of herbals.

I've finally, after years of frustration - been able to get more 'normal' sleep than with any other prescription drugs or cannabis (which I gave up on completely to help me sleep).

Now I'm on natural herbal supplements and melatonin - something that finally works for me ! Yahoooo !~

So, melatonin is certainly not for everyone - but it might help with YOUR (fill in the blanks + names) particular form of PCa ......

My biggest problem is not in falling asleep initially, but in early-morning (2-4 am) and not easily falling BACK to sleep. Melatonin seemed to worsen that, and yes, with some extra-vivid dreams too.

I may try magnolia bark extract... is that on your list? I recall Patrick mentioned it might help with that early morning rise in cortisol that seems to make for some especially negative thought patterns when waking prematurely.

That reminds me of a bottle of 'supplements' that I have stored away in my ;stash cupboard' AND couldn't remember WHY I bought it - LOL !

I'll have to read up on that again.

THIS is what I take for insomnia and it doesn't always work - BUT it beats going DAYs without sleep which is how bad it got 4 me ... now, I usually get about 4 hours of interrupted sleep 2 out of 3 days and feel I have energy MOST of the time.

It's funny, but insomnia runs in the family - I was caught sleep walking - even as a child - a sign that you are 'hardcore'.

1) 30 mg of melatonin - 20 mg of time delayed (60 minutes before bedtime) and 10 mg of quick crunch when I go to bed.

2) L-Theanine - 250 mg - 90 minutes before bedtime

3) 5-HTP - 100 mg - 90 minutes before bedtime

4) Valerian - 400 mg - 30 - 45 mins before bedtime

5) KASHA Natural Sleep formula (Magnesiums / Passion Flower / Hops / Chamomile - a mix with more ...) ( 1 cap - normal dose = 2) 30 - 45minutes before bedtime

6) PhiNaturals Natural Sleep Aid (GABA / Passion Flower / Hops / Chamomile / Valerian - a mix with more ...) ( 1 cap - normal dose = 2) 30 - 45minutes before bedtime

7) Another misc 'brand' - I keep rotating different ones - there's always ONE more in

the mix.

8) I drink 2 cups of herbal tea - Chamomille / Lavender / fruit mix - no caffeine - 4 hours before and 1 1/2 hours before bedtime - I don't do any 'caffeine' past 2 PM

EVER.

NO alcohol past 7 PM (I usually drink 1 glass of red wine with dinner - NEVER more than that)

You might wonder how and why I got the mixes and ingredients together ?

Part of the mix is trying to keep my MIND from remaining active - that is the trigger that keeps me awake - it is MY insomnia in full press mode.

You'd think that a lot of exercise would help ? - NOT for me - some days I get a good workout and it doesn't seem to matter - that I haven't been able to figure out.

You'd think I'd be hung over or messed up in the morning - NOT a bit !

Works for me - MOST of the time - AND it does sound kind of extreme - it has taken me years to figure it out ...

That was 'discovered' about 6 months ago - NOT on ADT and not under any form of treatment - I sure HOPE it keeps working IF / when I have to start treatment again - which will be soon I expect .....

What are your other sleep herbs? I tried adding passion flower, valerian and chamomile capsules, but I feel tired next day. I am currently taking Melatonin 40 mg with Theanine and half tablet of antihistamin sleeping pills.

look above this post - I just filled in a summary - hope it helps - but I'm NOT typical ...

Glad to hear you’re finally able to sleep. Would you care to share your ‘STACK of HERBALS’? I haven’t slept in years and now with Stage4 PCa I’m willing to try just about anything to sleep. I take an herbal cocktail in the form of a smoothie but nothing I’m taking seems to help sleep. I just started 20mg of melatonin and hoping for the best with that too.

You can help the process along by wearing blue light blocking glasses (or greenhouse grow light filtering ones) that are 'yellow looking' when you watch TV or look at any screens and perhaps use a green light in your room(s) for at least 1 1/2 - 2 hours before bed time. That helps the 'clock' and can be habit forming as a routine to prepare for sleep.

By 'STACK' I mean the ingredients in a given 'Brand Name' AND those from more than one source.

I guess the term 'stack' comes from my 'programming days' - but suggests a pointer to a list.

Note that MOST ingredients are extracts - not just the raw stuff - so they are much more potent. I'll take 3 OR 4 from the list - depends how I feel - If I'm feeling tired, it's as few as 2 if not then its 3 or 4 ( + the melatonin (30 mg) + L-Theanine + 5 HTP)

Most are from Amazon -> in Canada - that's where I'm located.

IF you read labels you can find 'similar / equivalents' - You'll get the idea .....

I'll be specific and give you the ingredients in a typical stack, based on 4 labels:

from KASHA - 'Natural Sleep Formula'- (each capsule contains) ->

-magnesium glycinate - 400 mg

- magnesium taurate - 40 mg

- passion flower - 50 mg

- lemon balm - 50 mg

- valerian root - 50 mg

- chamomille flower - 50 mg

- Hops - an acid extract - 30 mg

- Vitamin B6 - 5 mg

from PhiNaturals - (from USA) - 'Natural Sleep Aid' - (each capsule contains) ->

- GABA - 50 mg

- melatonin - 250 mcg

- passion flower - 150 mg

- Skullcap - 25 mg

- chamomille flower - 50 mg

- valerian root - 150 mg

from AOR - 'Ortho Sleep ' - (each capsule contains) ->

- GABA - 50 mg

- L-Theanine - 100 mg

- griffonia seed - 50 mg

- melatonin - 3 mg

- valerian root - 75 mg

- passion flower - 16 mg

- lemon balm - 150 mg

from Adrien Gagnon (Quebec) - 'Relaxen Night' - (each capsule contains) ->

- valerian root - 50 mg

- passion flower - 50 mg

- hops -100 mg

- linden - 5 mg

- melissa - 5 mg

from Plant Vital (Canada) ' Gentle Sleep' - (each capsule contains) ->

- magnesium oxide - 100 mg

- valerian root - 125 mg

- L - Tryptophan - 100 mg

- lemon balm (melissa flower) - 100 mg

- GABA - 125 mg

- chamomille flower - 50 mg

- 5 HTP - 25 mg

- melatonin - 3 mg

I could add more 'formulations' but you see a pattern here. The ingredients repeat themselves in a lot of 'similar' products - so read the labels and you can save money and / or target individual ingredients and come up with your own 'STACK' after finding out what seems to work and what doesn't.

What you don't want to do is spend money and pay extra for the same ingredients in BIG brand names' if you can find the same stuff in another.

Hope this helps you out - it will take a bit of time and experimentation to figure it out - but if it works for me, I'm convinced it will work for others.

The good news is also that NONE of these products messes with your PCa and there are no real bad drug interactions that I have found that would be dangerous - but you should check your list against any of these before consuming any of them.

Good luck and sleep well .......

Do you take melatonin PJ?

pjoshea13 profile image
pjoshea13 in reply to6357axbz

50 mg before bed.

(I started out 16+ years ago at 40 mg. This was part of the Life Extension PCa protocol. They increased it to 50 mg long ago. I never have sleep disruption due to melatonin.)

For the longest time, LEF was the only option for 10 mg caps.

But there are cheaper brands now:

I take 5 per night.

Perfect Vitamin Products MELATONIN MAX. 60mg/cap. Also on Amazon at same price. One per day unless on docetaxel, in which case take it by the truckload.

in reply topjoshea13

The link to the paper indicates 20mg...why are you taking 2.5 times the amount?

And I believe it's known that as we age we produce less melatonin so it probably okay to take it daily year round if it doesn't interrupt sleep....as noahware indicates, some people do not sleep well with melatonin.

Thanks for posting this article. I am relieved when I read this - I've been taking melatonin for years - at least 20 mg daily (@ night) and always wondered if some of the 'claims' that melatonin was a 'miracle' drug has some basis of truth - for some of us.

60 Minutes (the TV show) did a feature on melatonin at least 30 years ago - the claims were a bit outrageous - but I think it pointed to more study being required to show MORE proof than anecdotal stories about certain 'older' individuals.

I'm at the HI risk end of the spectrum - G9 / N1 - with conformed regional spread + having had radiation treatment (the max) and some ADT over about 16 months in 2017.

My ADT holiday has lasted over 2 years and I've had a BCR (not a surprise) - so I'm not sure what awaits me - but I am optimistic that I'll be around for at least another 5 years.

What I did find the most interesting was the anti-cancer aspects of the drug.

That was unexpected - it helps explain (maybe) what has been happening to me. I'm statistically ahead of the curve in some ways and wonder why I'm doing as well as I am - it certainly didn't look that way 3 + years ago at Dx.

I will be posting a MAJOR update SOON on my condition - ALL the scans and results are in - except the PSA test which will be done this Monday. I'll be meeting the MO in less than 2 weeks - when the battle / action plan will be revealed ......
