What are the benefits and risks involved with radiation therapy to prostrate and hip region pls? Kindly answer.

Radiation of the prostate can make the problem worse before it makes it better. You may be better off with a TURP if you are already unable to urinate. The radiation to your metastases on your hip may help with the bone pain there.

Well, my 1st line of defense in my prostate cancer attack was 42 IMRT rad treatments, Oct-Dec 2005. But the Rad Onc team mapping and planning me with a CT scan and Ultrasound an enlarged bladder full of 2100mL urine. No it was not because of enlarged prostate gland that's not the case. I was Dx'd with a Neurogenic bladder issue i had not idea I had. Surprise!

My only course of bladder relief was to learn to self cath myself. Fun fun, been doing that for 15 + yrs now. Yes my IMRT rad was successful for 3 years. Then went on 1st doses of ADT Lupron and bicalutimide only. FFW to 2015-2016 then 2017 I developed an undetected Urethral stricture making self-cath'ing hard then impossible.

I had to have a repair surgery March 2017 called an Urethralplasty @ IU Methodist Hospital. It was extremely successful, but yes still have to Self-Cath 5-6X's daily(Neurogenic bladder still neurogenic).

My point is radiation oncologists do tell you or they did not tell IMRT can cause strictures.

Me too! Before my Urethralplasty stricture repair fun(not) surgery i had:

1. Bleeding issues constantly, well too many.

2. Only 2 UTI’s episodes

3. 2 DVIU (internal urethomies) reaming out. Not fun.

4. More bleeding

5. A Thanksgiving ER trip 2016 that required immediate opening. That changed my attitude fast and

6. Got me my Urethroplasty with my Fav IU health urologist in Indy. I now have 2, did have 3 urologist in Indy, and i live in Ft Wayne.. it helps to get the most knowledgeable doc’s.

So far so good.

I’m going in for an ulbilical hernia repair surgery this Thursday.

Hi... My dad's PSA was 672.7 and Gleason score of 9. Had one round of Lutetium 177 therapy and after one month, his PSA has come down to 450. He is a CKD patient so cannot have Chemotherapy. Doctors are suggesting radiation therapy to the prostrate gland to remove the urinary bag that they have put from his bladder.

Please help me with the pros and cons of radiation therapy to the prostate region.

From my experience with imrt ..I say do it . I did adt with imrt to the prostate bed only ...and it shank my pc tumors allowing me to shed bi lateral tubes out of my back and a foley . I did pretty good all considered . But i was then 53 now 59 .. QOL for me with tubes and bags for a year and a half sucked . This is a QOL urological issue in my opinion ... I’d follow professional advice ... I have side effects and issues from both treatments . But losing the bags and peeing freely again was a miracle for me .. I hope that he can get a break and improve . I saw my dad a few months after he had a radical prostatectomy .. he was gaunt and just wanted to die . Mom was very cruel to him also . ...He kind a gave up . He passed of an unknown heart condition ( no autopsy per mom) a few months later . He was ready to check out . Keep dads spirit up any way that you can . He knows that you love him . ❤️

First of all thank you for your quick reply. How old is your Dad?

Here is my experience regarding radiation. Remember we all are NOT the same and my radiation was for radiation of "the bed" years after I had a RPD. But ask here again on another day for more info from our wise members. Here's my experience:

I had 8 weeks of salvage radiation to "the bed". 5 days a week (not weekends) for 8 weeks minus 1 day for a total of 39 sessions at MSKcc. The actual radiation was like getting an x-ray by my dentist. I never had any side effects during the whole 39 sessions. However 2 years later my left urinary tract was "fried" as per my urologist (or from passing prior kidney stones he was not sure). So I had to have a urinary stent placed up my urinary tract (through my willy which is really nothing - sounds terrible but it's nothing) to aid in passing my urine (which was never a problem anyway). So I had stents in and out every three months for many years and now I'm stent free, However today 15% of urine from left kidney and 85% from right kidney, but not a problem. So make sure you get a good radiologist. Also I don't know if this would apply to you but guys here recommend SPACEOAR HYDROGEL to be inserted for protection of parts of your body. Make sure you ask your R.O. about the spaceoar and make sure you ask here on this forum before getting fried.

Urine stoppage is what got me my APC diagnosis three years ago. I self-cathed while on ADT for a couple years, then went through 44 IMRT sessions a year ago. Six weeks later I passed a couple of chunks of tissue and began peeing nearly normally (can't force a stream by gravity works nicely). If it weren't for ADT, I'd name my next child after the RO.

Make sure if you decide to have TURP you have it BEFORE radiation
