PC patient looking for travel information

I have had PC for 16 years. Presently we are vacationing down in Florida and trying to figure out if traveling (driving) back to Indiana is recommended. It will take two days to get home. My PC is under control (PSA .2) and on a drug vacation. Will have to travel through Al, TN, KY and IN. However, my immune system is low (CD4 cells low at 316) because of extensive radiation treatments. Any insights would be welcomed.

Thanks

Agree with what others have said, toughest part will be having to stay in a hotel on the way back. Be prepared to sanitize every hard surface in the room upon arrival as if it was never cleaned. Ask the hotel prior to your stay what they are doing to keep guests safe. I would assume that hardly anyone is staying in hotels these days so that might minimize some of the risk. Ask for a room that no one has stayed in recently. Or just play it safe, pull into a rest stop for a little shut eye if needed.

If you opt for rest stop sleeping imo have a hand gun handy. These are becoming increasingly desperate times.

No, I’m not a gun guy.

Having said that I would opt for the hotel room. We recently spent 3 nights in hotels on a visit to MD Anderson. Fortunately we had a spray can of Lysol 99.9% disinfectant. Made quick work sanitizing hard/ frequently touched surfaces. You can also make your own. Alcohol, hydrogen peroxide or if you don’t have those (you won’t find them in a store at this point) use bleach water. 1/3 cup Clorox to 1 gallon water.

You won't find alcohol in the pharmacy section of the store, but it can maybe still be found in the liquor section. Everclear is pure 95% ethanol (dilute to 70% for best results). Since that brand name is well known, it may be sold out too, but there is a lesser known brand Diesel, which is more likely to be in stock. Ethanol is preferable anyhow, since you can drink it if you're so inclined, which you won't want to do with isopropyl alcohol. Vodka is typically about 40% ethanol, so not good enough as a disinfectant, but if you mix it 1:1 with Everclear/Diesel, it brings the mix up to about 68% alcohol, which is nearly ideal.

Stay well.

Good points

Can you use Everclear as a spray or just a wipe?

Either. When u spray on hard surface don’t wipe off right away. Let it dry

got it thanks

Should work either way. My son (a biomedical engineer) told me that research has shown that 70% ethanol is a better disinfectant than 95% Everclear, so dilute it. The easiest way, as I mentioned before, is to buy the cheapest vodka you can find and mix them 1:1, or maybe slightly more Everclear than vodka to obtain 70%.

We just traveled home from Daytona to Rochester NY, no problems. Packed all meals and spent one night in a hotel in Christenburg VA. Wore gloves to pump gas and used wipes and hand sanitizer often. This was just at the beginnings of all the lock-downs.

Blessings to al travelers.

Drive non-stop eat few packed meals.... Pee in the woods and don't forget what bears do in the woods (bring toilet tissue). Wear gloves when pumping gas.... pay full amount of gas in cash (no change). If you use credit card - wipe it clean. If you have to sleep in your car make sure window/doors are locked.... don't use your heater, bring blankets. Bring plenty of water and soap. Sleep in major gas stops.... If you happen to own a shotgun make it visible from the outside of the car. If you happen to own a pet crocodile... mount it to the hood of the car......Even better rent a WW II M 1 tank.....(fully loaded)....

What a world!!!

Or make a sign to place in clear visibility: “ Veteran police officer, may be COVID infected. Do not approach. “

I am also in florida now. I am a snowbird got caught when this got bad. I emailed my oncologist and he said not to travel, regardless of the destination. I was prepared to do all the prevention methods that have been described here. Further, I don’t even have compromised immune system at this time. Hard to go against your own oncologist. I also have a 2 night stay to get to my destination

I too live in Fl. And summer in Mn. Also, have prostate cancer for 18 years.

We in the last two years have been flying instead of driving. Two options are fly home and have the car shipped or have a car at both ends. We chose the latter. As for shipping costs the difference between that and flying are not too much. Given gas and lodging and food are pretty close.

We this year are delaying our trek up north until things straighten out. To us it’s too dangerous to go up now.

Good luck in your journey.

Flying will expose you to all on the plane. Non-essential travel now on planes. Living all those years with PC, should not be wiped out by this unnecessary trip.

There's no place like home. Hope they don't start hoarding vodka. Life is already hard enough. Hope you have a nice trip. If the motel clerk's name is Norman - just keep going.

Why would you run the chance of exposing yourself to Covid-19. That can kill you in days. Prostate Cancer will not. Shelter in place, means shelter in place. Stay safe, do not increase your chances of infection by this possibly fatal virus.
