Is anyone else experiencing repeated bouts of Prostatitis as a result of their cancer therapy?

I have been plagued by repeated hospitalizations for infections that are seated in my prostate. They never can pin it down exactly, but the last time it did get much better after a course of doxycycline.

your infection might be due to unusual bacteria such as Chlamydia, gonococci etc and therefore it responded to the broad spectrum antibiotic, doxycycline.

I think infections are more common than realized because of transrectal prostate biopsies. It injects e coli into your prostate. In general, antibiotics don't work - the prostatitis relapses on its own whether you take an antibiotic or not. It never really goes away. The combination of prostatitis and prostate cancer in the prostate can cause increasing bouts of urinary problems. For that reason, some men heve their prostates removed prophylactically.

yes, husband had chronic infections, one after another. his was e-coli, he catheterizes 2xd

a month ago started prophylactic dose of antibiotics 1xd and so far no infections.

I had many UTIs at the beginning of the process (due to catheters).

t took several rounds of different antibiotics before I finally cleared.

These infections are tough to manage in some cases.

I dealt with them for about 5 consecutive months.

Eventually, (hopefully) they'll get the right drug to finally manage it.

I trust it will be resolved, but it is a royal pain in the a@#s in the meantime.

Hi, Do you know which drugs finally brought it under control ?

Sorry, I don't recall, but they tried several before it finally cleared. There is something about this area of our body that is difficult to treat consistently.

Once they got it right, I haven't looked back. Hasn't happened since.

I do recall that some left over 'irritation', persisted for a few days, but it got better within 4 or 5 days.

I know it's frustrating .....

I do know that it is kind of a crap shoot finding the right treatment. The docs sem really puzzled when I show up they take all kinds of scans and cultures and they write it off as atypical pneumonia even though I am not coughing and the Xray looks the same of my lungs as before my ER visit. I think that nobody understands that territory well. So far the doxycycline has stopped it in its tracks. I keep going back to the same docs so that they will try something different this time.

Taking cultures helps if they can do it on a timely basis.

I recall that it had to be done eventually, which might have helped them get it right ....

next time I have to go to the ER, I am going to insist that they do a DRE and take a specimen for a culture before the start the antibiotics. We will see if that helps with the search for the culprit.

Wondering if prostatitis. There is some burning sensations in my groin area! It comes and goes...tip of penis and scrotum. Had radiation 15 years ago. Thinking possibly it could also be due to scared tissue.

Thanks

The pain that I have is centered around my tailbone and it is deep inside me. It is not in my penis or scrotum. It still could be scar tissue but it is inside my prostate. Because when the pain is alleviated I can urinate easier

in reply torogerwegner

I still have my prostate.. in some form. If I hold my pee too long like on a car trip I get pain. We are all permanently altered in many ways . Take care

in reply tobilly1950

the main thing that has stopped his UTI's is he is on a prophylactic dose of antibioic 1xd.

it has made a world of difference. it has reduced his rate of infections significantly. to the point i can't recall if he has had one. this has given him a much better quality of life. he continues to take otc Azo cranberry pills, rx tamulosin (sp). But the prophylactic antibiotic made a huge difference

That is the next step in my battle with prostatitis. I have a bottle ready for the next attack . I also had some very severe bladder spasms with the latest bout with this, so I have a strong med in reserve for that also . I am learning to ask for help early when this raises its ugly head. Good luck !!
