My husband broke his arm yesterday. He had been having pain for several weeks. I finally bullied him into telling the doctor and she had him do a full set of x-rays, which showed the lesion but no fracture.
Less than 3 hours later, he was at the store, picked up a bag containing two small tomatoes, and heard a crack. 6 hours later and after repeat x-rays and a CT, we know the bone broke in the area where the tumor is. He has a temporary cast and needs to see an orthopedic surgeon.
He is in extreme pain. Up until this point, he's had mild pain and has been living and working without much issue. Now he's in a chair and can't move. We're both scared this is the beginning of worse things to come.
Does anyone know how this can be treated? I don't see how they can pin it when there's no good bone left. Will the irradiated it? Is it possible they'll just leave it broken and let him live with the pain? I don't think he can.
Also, he's convinced opioids don't work for him. They've given him narco and it barely touches the pain. Again, he's terrified of what's to come.
I hate this disease. I really hate it. Hate. It.

If it is a simple fracture it will be treated with a cast. A simple fracture is when two fragments of broken bone are still aligned and not separated by a gap
If it is a compound fracture (gap between two fragments present) either the orthopedic surgeon may align them using external force or he might have to put a steel rod in it.
Because he had very high Alk phosphatage level, his bones have gotten brittle due to bony lesions and thus, are very at risk for fragility fractures.
Its really very hard to deal with this constant uncertainty and still remain calm and help the loved one.
I’m sorry for this pain . Horrific really for him.. To not be able to stop the pain is hell..I pray for mercy and a solution ...First go our muscles then the bones . Ive got joint pains , mostly hips and shoulders but random over my skeleton.. some times just walking I feel like I’m
Breaking up . It’s a hec of a self image of just fading away .Just breaking an arm like that is a nightmare. He needs you now more than ever . Please let me know when a plan to fix it is set ?? Hold your head up and get him better .. Many prayers🙏🏼. Scott
Tripped yesterday on cords and hoses while moving air compressor. Fell between garage steps and fence(4foot wide area ). Luckily my shoe came off tangled foot so I didn't land hard on cement steps, but burn recovering arm took a beating against fence. Called my wife on cell to help put me back together. Bruises, bangs, and sore shoulder, but no broken bones. Doc wants to start me on Xgeva, but osteopenia still not quite into critical stages yet. Guess I Still have angels watching over me.
CantChoose, Hope you heal quickly and with as little pain as possible.
Wtf ? Buddy ? I too walk perilously in osteopenia. On prolia. In pain . Maybe better to start xgeva before it’s critical . Our hopes lie in these bone meds. . Good you didn’t break nothing . Don’t make hurting self a habit shooter .
No! We've asked a couple times about Xgeva and MO replied "his bones are strong." I'm also upset because this lesion was 3.2cm, and my reading indicates that's giant. I could feel the bump on his arm. What is the point of doing scans if they just say "hmm, I guess there's a giant lesion there." At what point do they suggest radiation?
I keep thinking we're seeing the best oncologist around, we're going to get guidance, but we don't seem to get guidance.
I assume your oncologist is looking at a recent bone density scan to make the call "Your bones are strong". The loss of bone density through ADT affects us all - some more rapidly than others, and some very rapidly.
Did you do a baseline DEXA bone density scan ? That is something must be done before saying "bones are strong" If T score should not be on anything below -1.5 (wrist, hip or spine) I am planning to do whole body DEXA and put this T score on the fracture risk calculator (FRAX) which tells how likely the person is going to have fracture.
I don't know if you saw my note below. He is having a bone biopsy Monday to confirm or rule out multiple myeloma. His bones are missing pieces, which I guess is not typical of prostate cancer.
