Bananas and V-8 seem to alleviate calf stiffness/cramps

JazzMan42 profile image

I previously posted a question regarding some stiffness and occasional cramping in my calves thinking it may have something to do with PCa and/or meds. Received many good suggestions from our fellow warriors. I decided to take the easiest approach and started a banana a day and 8 ounces of low sodium V-8 juice, both of which boast good potassium. Hoping not to tempt fate, so far this simple solution has worked. Thanks, guys, for being there for the thousands of questions this dread condition conjures up.

I also heard that bananas and V8 worked for prostrate as well ...

the V8 juice was great with Grey Goose ( no pain at all when used liberally ) butt that Banana was always uncomfortable when I tried to sit down. Didn’t seem to do much either ...

Just say’in

Peace brother jm42 ✌️

Hey Kaliber, I think your problem was that you didn't peel the banana first.

I've also been trying to increase my potassium intake by the same means in hopes it might help keep my blood pressure reasonable. However, after reading Kaliber 's reply I may not be able to eat any more bananas :-)

Sometimes we need extra Potassium as we sweat it out and do not replace enough. Take the pills. Have you tried a teaspoon of raw chopped up ginger every day for BP?

I have not tried raw ginger, but occasionally have ginger tea. Do you have any links to back up the ginger and blood pressure connection? Just looking for something more authoritative than "I read it on the internet"

in reply to tom67inMA

Its in the literature and it worked for me. My BP and blood sugar were all over the place for 2 years after chemo. Raw ginger seemed to fix both. It is a must have along with raw garlic in any case - good stuff.

As you note, both are good sources of potassium, and the lycopene are good anti cancer micronutrients.

HeyJazzMan42!

Are you taking a statin? Statins are known for causing cramps. Grapefruit can make the side effects of statins worse. Dr. Charles "Snuffy" Meyers used statins as a preventive for recurrence. The lipid soluble statins such as Atorvastatin are the statins that are useful for us.

I don't know if this would help your cramps but it works for the NFL.

I do take atorvastatin because of a triple bypass several years ago (if it ain’t one thing it’s another), and I avoid grapefruit like the plague. Does this mean I should try out for the NFL?

Hey JazzMan42!

It means that if you experience cramps some pickle juice is one of the best and fastest cures for them. I believe that they used the juice from Vlasic pickles.

Prune juice is high in potassium too and it, ahem, helps with regularity.
