My father is taking medicines since 2 yrs after 40 radiation sessions and doctor has asked to come in 3 months instead of every 1 month checkup. Just now he got back pain and urine problem so did the checkup and it says fatty liver. Is it the daily medicine side effect? Can this be controlled? Is it manageable? Or is it stress side effect? Doctor did some more tests and will check tomorrow. Just gave a medicine today.
Fatty liver : My father is taking... - Advanced Prostate...
Fatty liver
The best treatment available is weight loss with diet and exercise.
"Excessive accumulation of triglycerides (TG) in liver, in the absence of significant alcohol consumption is nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). ... Ingested carbohydrates are a major stimulus for hepatic de novo lipogenesis (DNL) and are more likely to directly contribute to NAFLD than dietary fat."

For years I had elevated liver enzymes.
I did several imaging test and none was able to prove NAFLD but since all other things were ruled out the assumption was I had fatty liver.
Few months ago I started taking Metformin to help fighting PCa even though Im not diabetic.
Since then my liver function tests are in the middle of the range.
Maybe you should check this
Can I ask what your daily dose of Metformin is? I was at 2000mg per day and was suffering tiredness/fatigue. Cut it back to 1000mg and energy is back. I'm not stage 2 diabetic either. Thanks Bob
Okay thanks for quick response
most of the patients I have seen with "fatty liver" "steatosis" do not even know about it and do not have pain.
"most of the patients I have seen" Are you a doctor or just in the medical field?

Yup. Still in practice. 25 years as a primary care general internist and 25 as an occupational physician. And now getting educated in PCa!!!
What a coincidence... I was a young paYtient for 25 years and now an old one for 25 years. Unfortunately getting my Pca education too!!!

Hi Kshiprakapoor,
We don't know the full history of your father and we don't know what medicine he is now taking, and exactly what the radiation was for. What is his Psa? If he has a urination problem it indicates his prostate gland is swollen, and that needs to be fully investigated. I've had back pain re-occur many times during my life after I turned 45 from effects of age, and doing lots of building construction work but usually it came and went after taking Voltaren, and then later I saw an excellent acupuncture man who cured my back pain and sometimes neck pain in a couple of days. The mainstream doctors and modern drugs and also chiropractors were useless. But then back pain can occur if Pca has spread locally around PG and to bones, and it often likes to spread into spine. But having excess fat in and around liver is usually associated with eating too much and not exercising enough. The food he eats may be rich in sugars, especially fructose, a common cheap form of sugar added to many processed foods to make it sweet, but which is very bad for anyone's health. But again we don't know much about his general fitness levels, age, weight, size etc. It becomes more difficult for older ppl to stay healthy as they get older.
I'm 72, have been fighting Pca since 2009, and have had to be very strict about my diet which I cannot share with anyone because its a form of antisocial behaviour to eat a bowl of uncooked fresh vegetables every night, and maybe 2 eggs. People think I am starving myself, eating such a frugal diet with so few calories of maybe half the recommended 2,400 calories a day which is far too much for me.
I am also presently cycling around on a bicycle about 150km a week, it takes about 8 hours, spread over the week. The rest of my time is sedentary, sitting down not doing much because I don't have to. I am retired from work, and my house is in good condition after much work I did before 50, so I only have to maintain it. I am well off because of earlier hard work and prudence. I have no debts, and have a simple way of life and yet I live in a society that generally likes to over eat, spend too much on junk and borrow too much. Most ppl are consuming too much of all things, they always seem to want a lot, and still not be happy, and they don't know how to be frugal, but I am naturally frugal, and not overweight, and fairly healthy despite being a stage 4 Pca patient. At the moment my Pca is 0.4, after having Lu177 treatment for countless Pca bone mets that spread from prostate gland in past years. I don't have many other health problems apart from normal aging.
If I drink wine and eat any red meat, my arthritis aches, so I have become mainly vegetarian, and I avoid anything with sugar in it.

Thanks Patrick for your reply. Good to hear that things can be under control if managed properly.
I have been in remission for 3 years with pc, I did change my lifestyle, I eat a lot of veggies, eat 90 % of time clean meat both in chick, and beef, I did have a elevated liver enzymes that was high, I bought a product called "Liver refresh" it had all the plants that are used for a liver cleanse. I was on statins and read that they are really bad for the liver, so I decided to quit them too. recently my liver enzymes have returned to normal. I don't know what caused my elevated liver but everything we take for our pc has side effects. I did have a surface blood clot on my calf and was put on Eliquis and Xarelto each for 3 months, my blood clot is gone but read they are also bad for the liver. I believe the clot was caused by Lupron shot. I saw where the shot can cause blood clots. I am off the blood thinners now. I feel the reason I am in remission for 3 years is because I I eat all the veggies that are antioxidants for cancer, I saw a video on youtube called "Ted Talks" and the speaker talked about foods that can prevent cancer and even reduce cancer tumours so I eat foods that are listed on the presentation, here it is .
