My wife is concerned about me becoming addicted to OXYCODONE 5 MG at night before I go to bed. She wants me to keep trying Tylenol but it does nothing for me.I know its is very addicting but it gives me so much relief. Does anyone else on here take it and have you tried anything else that works as well?..

I use 10mg. I also use fentanyl. I wouldn’t worry about addiction. If you reach the point of not having pain, your medical team can help you wean.

It seems to me that becoming addicted is the least of your worries. Since you will probably not stop taking it, what's the difference if you become addicted? You cannot keep taking increasingly higher doses of oxycodone, though. I learned with my mother that morphine is infinitely titratable - meaning you can always progress to higher doses if you increase slowly enough. It's a good idea to have something like fentanyl on hand for breakthrough pain. Constipation due to opiates can be dose limiting. You might find 800 mg of ibuprofen works better for bone pain. Experiment with your doctor's advice and see what works best for you. There are many choices now, and marijuana may augment the pain relief. You might want to consult with a pain specialist about all this.

You're right TA, so what if I become addicted to it?.. and the doctor had told me that at MDA, when he prescribed it. But she wasn't in the room. He said addiction is the least of my worries at this point..

I hope people read what you wrote about ibuprofen. Also add Tylenol to 800 mg ibuorofen

Do you live in a legal medical cannabis state?

Sorry to hear you can't get it.

I came across an article a while back on strategies for those that need to be on opioids. It's got some useful information in it, maybe there is something there that could help.

Could you find CBD oil (without the THC)? My husband used that before he got his medical marijuana license. Helped mood and sleep. For pain relief it took about 8 weeks to build up in his system before he felt some relief.

You need relief Dean. If 5 helps..... that's s0oo wonderful. Always remember stool softeners or miralax. Elgie's been on around 30 with fentanyl, aleve, cymbalta, mary jane ;) intermittently and Celebrex for many years.

Take it when it gives you so much relief. This comes from a wife who usd to be always concerned that her husband would become addicted to Oxyconten or Sevredol or MST Continuous. But I have learned not to be concerned. The most important thing is quality of life. And when you get relief from taking it every night, when you then get a good night, so what if you get addicted to it? It is better to live with an addiction to some drug or other than to have no quality of life because yu are in a lot of pain or other distress. Tell your wife I said that :-)

Best wishes

Mel.

There's a difference between addiction and taking what you need for pain. Addiction has all kinds of negative connotations that don't apply to anybody who uses an opioid for pain. Pain damages your ability to get a good night's sleep, and sleep is vital in any illness. Pain damages your quality of life, causes depression, makes you want to give up. You're not taking it to get high, which would quickly require higher and higher doses. You're taking it like you would any medication - meaning you take what you need, what works. You can get habituated to it, but that's a much slower process having more to do with the progress of your illness rather than with the lessening of the drug's effectiveness. Be good to yourself.
