Hi everyone. Have not been on, to much running to hospitals and doctors. I have a question, my husband has no appetite and everything tastes like metal or cardboard and we don't know what to do to get him to eat. Has anybody had this happen and how do you make it better. Thanks in advance.

It's called "dysgeusia." It's a common side effect of chemo, but I haven't heard of it from Zytiga. What does his oncologist say?

TA I would assume you are referring to me with Zytiga. I have a constant cough and can't be told if its the Zytiga or the lung metastsis. Zytiga may cause coughing as said to be a side effect . The oncologists aren't sure. I have brought up bad tastes in food every month I see them. Just put in what is happening to me and what I do to try to counter it. I have 2 Oncologist (one UCSF) and a Radiologist who have me as the first lung only for all of them. They have had bone to lung etc., but not just lung. You be amazed at the questions I ask and their not sure. Wanted to just input my 2 cents. May not be worth your dollar I just tried to help.

I meant Xtandi which is what the OP is currently taking.

Yes, first Mets to lung are rare.

I'm on Zytiga, Prednisone and Lupron coming up on 6 months. Everything tastes bad. I experiment with myself having a burrito, a slice of pizza, or a sip of Coke all past favorites. They don't even taste good. I have only a 4 lb gain since APC diagnosed in 2016. I walk for exercise but think its more about no caloric intake that keeps my weight where it is.

My other half is a RN. Always asking what are you eating , what have you had? Got my self a NutriBullet and love it. All fruits (freeze these) banana, nuts, spinach I do daily. Needing liquid to blend I will put in the occasional V8. They are refreshing.

Also as a side note my oncologist was shocked when he saw my cholesterol. In two months it went from 199 down to 162. This coincided with me buying the NutriBullet.

Best to you both on this journey..

Hi prettypatricia, when I was on taxitere and cisplatin chemo for lung cancer, I had the same thing : poor appetite, but especially a horrible metallic taste to whatever I was trying to eat. Based on the advice of more veteran chemo patients and the chemo nurses, I began using only plastic ware ( plastic forks, spoons etc ) and changed to a softer, somewhat bland diet; ie softly scrambled eggs, puddings, jello, soft ice cream, cottage cheese, and so on. Basically that approach is what helped get me through chemo. Please change to plastic ware ASAP, as that alone should help your husband at least somewhat. All Best Wishes, judg69

Had to eat sauerkraut and kielbasa with spicy mustard for one of my main meals. Interesting enough, tapioca pudding was also a favorite. And steaks cooked over smoky mesquite wood coals. Not my normal favorites, but with changed taste they were pretty good.

My husband has a medical marijuana license in NY but the offering is limited. He takes the “Sleep” product at night which knocks him out due to the high THC. But if he hasn’t eaten the psychedelic effects keep him from sleeping.

The best appetite stimulation he has found so far is the “weed butter” a friend’s son makes for him. Apparently he slow cooks it for 24 hours in a crockpot. It works wonders for him - when we can get it - and starts devouring everything in sight.

He said it improved things a bit

Good luck

You all deserve to taste

Prior to dx I was self cathing g an on a drug Hyaphen ,not sure of spelling . It turned my pee blue ,I couldn’t not eat or drink ..A heavy metallic taste exuded from my pores .. I went into K failure after a few weeks of hell .. It’s the chemo .Im sorry for the hell . Hopefully it’s temporary ...no eating is very bad but no drinking is fatal ... I pray his solution is near ..

I had the metallic taste when I started Zytiga. It went away eventually. On Docetaxel I have the appetite and nausea issue. I eat, but nothing really appeals to me. I take anti-nausea pill occasionally. Side effects are different for everybody. Stay strong.

During my treatment I totally lost my taste or interest in food as nothing was tasting good. I started just eating fruit yogurts as the acid seemed to give me some taste. I now eat many more vegetables as they have much more flavor that meat or pasta.
