Affordable PSAs

Does anyone have suggestions as to where a 38 year old man can get a PSA at a reasonable price? My son's insurance will not pay for a PSA until he is 40. The free screenings which are done in September will also not accept him until he is 40. We have a terrible family history and the PSAs in the Chicago are over $200.

Private MD labs has good prices and registering you get an email for another 15% off. Life Extension Foundation also has good prices on labs. lifeextension.com having a sale right now, PSA only $23.35.

The great thing about LEF is that you can buy a bunch of PSA requisitions while they are on sale. Although they have an expiry of 6 months, this is a LabCorp requirement. LEF will reissue expired reqs - they never actually expire.

Another thing I like is that I can call the LEF 800 number & place an order, get the req by email, print it out & take it to LabCorp, & get the result by email within 24 hours of placing the call.

Plus if you join their LEF club membership you will save enough in the bonus points to pay for the membership and then some if you use them often. I load up on the annual Lab Sale which will end in early June. Get them while their cheap!

LabCorp and Quest Labs online provide lab work; often there are sales. Nationwide.

Sidenote! Both LabCorp and Quest labs have online free access to your previous lab work. Great way to get informed and maintain a record to check your bio-markers. Without knowing where you have been and how you are doing, how do you know where you are going? Take charge of your health! 15-min. with the doctor does not cut it!

RonRonHU,

I may be premature in this but PM me whether or not Westchester is doable and I’ll make a call in the morning to see if it will work out.

I’m talking about my doc who first discerned my prostate cancer almost by accident. I’d have the digital exam rarely but she asked every time I saw her. On this occasion on a whim I said yes. I was at a Urologist the next day he said not to worry as it was a slow growing cancer and there was no rush to dive into treatment right away. As soon as I got the lab reports from the biopsy I made an appt. with the Cleveland Clinic and drove out and back in one day. The dock saw took a look at the results and slides, did his own dpe and gave me a look like I was an idiot (I’ll never forget his disdain) and said the same thing, what are you doing here, you’ve got plenty of time to decide. Because I had stones/seeds in my prostate traditional radiation therapy wasn’t an option. That being the case I made an appt. with one of the best known Urologist/Oncologists in the country. I want it out NOW. So my wife and I flew up one day, he saw and examined me and performed a RRP on me the next morning at 7:00 am. He came to see me about 8:00 pm that evening and explained that I didn’t have any time to spare as the capsule was beginning to rupture. My tests have been perfect ever since and it’s been about 6 years now. I contemplated having him marry an implant on the sly without my wife’s knowledge ala Jeremy Holmes (sp?) style and surprise her but in the end I figured it would be too much for her to bear.

PM me if you like.

Dave

Thank you Dave for your informative reply. I assume you are in Illinois since you mentioned Westchester. Happy to hear that you are 6 years post-op with "perfect" results! I will PM you, Ron

That sucks ..

directlabs.com is also a good source. Order through them and get tested at a Quest site.

Talk to the insurer's medical director about the terrible family history. S/he can make an exception to the guidelines.

I've been using Ulta Lab for some time. The $12.95 PSA is the same test run in the same Quest lab as the $300 version.

I just kept calling around (in Orlando) when they wanted $130,000. for 42 radiations. I found a urologist who had the same machine and charged me $30,000. (what Medicare paid). Four years later I had 30 more radiations but I was on on Medicare and I paid $42.00!
