Docetaxel
Hi, my husband has just finished a six month cycle of docetaxel, and it wasn't anywhere near as bad as we thought it would be, He had no sickness, wore a cool cap, so he didn't loose hair from his head, and it worked. Toenails and finger nails went a bit discoloured , Taste buds went to pot, everything tasted metallic, and he was a bit tired sometimes especially on the 4th or 5th day after treatment. But nothing else really, maybe just lucky.
The treatment is a good 2 or 3 hours, but is not painful at all.
Don't be scared, but if you have someone to go with you is always a help, but our nurses were lovely and cannot fault them at all.
We are new to this site and don't know much, but there are lots of lovely people on here that will answer any questions you may have
Also your mouth might become very dry, your Oncologist can give you some gel, to put in your mouth, especially when you go to bed.
Good luck

similar experiences to 16starsky said, except I didn't have hair in the first place lol
I just had 4th round last week (Wed 12th) Friday, Sat and Sun was my worst days, fatigue, aches and pains like Flu symptoms. I also had a lot of leg pain when first diagnosed and it tends to get worse with the Chemo but following week it's settles back down and I'm good with the pain. It's best to keep moving if you can (i.e. walking) and drink LOTS of water or herbal Tea.
I just started chemo (docetaxel) for the third time in 4 yrs. Make sure they give you an infusion of dexamethasone prior to chemo or have you take the pill form prior to and after to avoid side effects. You may experience neuropathy in your hands or feet. I havent yet. And nausea...make sure your doc gives you a prescription to zofran (there is as generic for this med) for the nausea. You may not experience nausea but...get med just in case.
Good luck , may it do it’s job well .
Hi,
I've previously posted an extensive article that addresses chemo (Docetaxel) side effects and how to avoid or minimize them. Search "chemo side effects" and you should be able to find it. If not, let me know and I'll re-post it. Good luck!
My dad just completed 6 cycles. Immediate post-treatment side effects were fairly minimal. He would get drowsy, but I think that was from the IV Benadryl he would receive with chemo. No significant nausea. He did develop peripheral neuropathy from cumulative doses, but he is a diabetic to begin with. He lost his hair and 2 toenails (no pain). The chemo + ADT knocked his PSA way down. Started at 2230 and currently 0.05. Alk phos also decreased from 400s down to 59 currently.
Best of luck.
Hi, I fasted two days before each of 15 taxotere sessions was able to avoid most side effects except for hair loss
