Should I avoid chicken?

LeeLiam profile image
67 Replies

Since I was diagnosed in 2006, I have been limiting my consumption of red meat. Instead, I eat fish, chicken, and turkey mostly. This weekend, I watched a video at nutritionfacts.org/video/tr... that mentions arachidonic acid. It seems chicken (and eggs) are the worst. The chart makes beef and burgers look good. I'd gladly swap the chicken for burgers but am I interpreting this correctly?

The evidence on dietary effects on prostate cancer are extremely weak. It probably takes a lifetime to have an effect. Extreme diets are unwarranted. Diet is probably a much bigger factor for heart health and diabetes.

Are you only talking about his specific on chicken? What about eggs, choline content, etc?

all dietary effects - but if it makes you feel good about participating - why not? As long as you don't impair your health.

Maybe the dude was bothered by some of the comments about getting in shape and cutting out beer...Not everyone shows up buff when we get APC......maybe for him, it's bad enough dealing with wrapping your mind around being diagnosed, let alone hearing stuff about the way you look or losing alcohol... It's overwhelming..

It takes time to get in shape and you got to do it early while you feel good.....saying I'll get started next year is stinkin' thinkin'.... I bet there are a bunch of us here that have a few days when we say,"Gee, I feel like skipping the gym today, but....we go any way..."

The only other way the post got axed is by Darryl and there was not much controversial stuff there...

I hope he didn't quit for his sake... there is more to us here on this forum than focusing on any negatives a person brings to this fight...

Two heaping tablespoons of olive oil mayo, cover it with sriracha chili sauce and mix, add more sriracha and mix till the taste is right for you, then add cayenne till heat is right, and chop fresh dill very fine...lots of it..... mix in and enjoy... that's how I make it and goes great as a dip for fish or chicken, over tomatoes as a snack... sorry, but I never measure stuff like this.....some days the little woman is like "Mama, this is really spicy...." and takes a drink of whatever is handy... I just laugh and keep eating...she adds some extra mayo to cut the heat... Enjoy the sauce...

Greek Swordfish recipe: 1. Medium size fish- cleaned, 2. butter, 3. lemon, 4. black pepper, 5. cayenne pepper, 6. oregano, 7. clean wooden board.

Clean the wooden board, place fish on board, scrub 1/4 butter on fish, douse with lemon juice, sprinkle black pepper, sprinkle pinch of cayenne pepper, sprinkle with lots of oregano (Greeks love oregano). Place the board in the broiler part of the oven and let it bake for 25 to 30 minutes. When done remove board from oven and scrape off fish into garbage can and eat the board.

Knowing nothing about arachidonic acid, I looked it up in the Wikipedia. I found out that, as with so many of the chemicals that we ingest, the health effects are still poorly understood. It occurs naturally in a number of organs in our bodies.

Our own bodies synthesize it from linoleic acid and, if we don't have enough linoleic acid or if our ability to synthesize it is impaired, we have to eat it in order to maintain good health. But whether an excess amount of it is harmful seems to me to be impossible to say. If you look at the paragraph in the Wikipedia article on Alzheimer's Disease you'll see a citation to one study that says it helps bring on the disease and another that says it delays onset of the disease. If you search for the word "cancer" you'll see a note that says the effect of arachidonic acid on cancer is unknown but supplementation is not recommended - not because it is known to hurt you but, apparently, because it seems possible and it hasn't been proven to be safe.

Does eating chicken constitute "supplementation" with arachidonic acid? Does not eating chicken cause levels of arachidonic acid to drop below hypothetically dangerous levels? Does eating foods without arachidonic acid cause the body to manufacture more of its own? Or vice versa, does eating foods with it cause the body to manufacture less? Finally, I note that the chart you've reproduced provides information about "eicosatetraenoic acid" (ETA), which may or may not be the same as arachidonic acid in chicken depending upon which versions of the molecules are involved.

So, in the opinion of this ignorant commentator whose only knowledge comes from two Wikipedia articles, I'd say ... don't worry about it. If you're bored, go ahead and read the Wikipedia articles. Then I recommend you open a good novel, watch a comedy on TV, or use the Internet to lookup a good joke that you haven't yet told your wife, and forget all about the acids in your chicken. It may actually improve your health.

At any rate, that's what I'm going to do.

Not sure what "Chicken and chicken mixed dishes" actually means. Is the AA solely from the chicken?

AA is an omega-6 & linoleic acid [LA], another omega-6, can be converted to AA.

For beef, the total omega-6 content is high for animals that go to feed lots before slaughter. Omega-6 is low in grass-fed animals.

For chickens, pastured/free range is better, but the birds will get grain in the diet.

For a healthier, better-tasting fowl, I have access to Poulet Rouge Fermier chickens from Joyce Farms in NC [1]. I can't say what the omega-6 content is.

It's an old-fashioned bird, which means that the breast is not super-sized. A local French restaurant had them on the menu, but diners complained about small breast portions. The restaurant continues to use the legs.

I once asked a local farmer if his birds were pastured. Apparently, the barn door is left open & the birds are free to forage, but their legs are not up to moving much with their heavy breasts, so they don't actually leave the barn. Experimentation with a heritage breed was not a success - customers were unhappy with the small breasts. Personally, small breasts are ok with me - I'm more of a thigh man.

...

Perhaps duck is a good alternative?

If you must eat chicken go organic. I became a vegetarian after being diagnosed. Since then I have added fish. Beef, pork and chicken are raised on growth hormone which can't be good for Pca.

i've had no doc in my 11years tell me what to eat and what not to. your food is not going to make any difference upon fighting pcancer. so eat what u want and enjoy it. u can ask your oncologist or urologist and see what they say

Charlie, you may be correct. But I have been told there is not one medical school in the country that requires an MD to have even one course in nutrition. Some say we don't have health care in this country, we have disease care. Doctors study disease, not health.

Victorq1 profile image

I recently listened to two MD specialists, who recommended

KETOGENIC diet even in cases where cancer treatments failed.

Is this starving the body and PC of any sugars?

Well I tried this diet and like moderate weight loss,

while eating meats ,olive oil and red wine in moderation.

My doctor is keeping me on Lupron

no Bicalutamide etc

and so far my PCA is not rising.

Simply chicken are the "fattest" food on the planet. Commercially loaded with growth chemicals, and other stuff you wouldn't eat by itself, but you are with chicken.

Fish consume carcinogens in the wild and much worse in farms.

Meat and It's cooking products contain carcinogens.

Why eat anything, even a little bit of a known food that may GIVE you cancer. You already have cancer. Why would you want more?

Like it or not, beans, root vegetables, water are safer choice. Think "Heart Healthy" food lifestyle. Refuse, deny yourself fats, any added sugar, dairy, meats, fish, poultry, wheat, etc.

it's your body and you can die sooner and in greater pain from eating tasty stuff if you like though.

Ralph1966 profile image

There was a study done on the effects of diet on the progression of PCA after Radical prostatectomy, and the food that associated with PSA increasing. Eggs and poultry with skin were the worset. Post-diagnostic consumption of poultry with skin and whole eggs were associated with 2-fold increases in risk of prostate cancer progression.

The conclusion was (A plausible mechanism that may explain our observed association between eggs and prostate cancer progression is high dietary choline. Egg consumption is a determinant of plasma choline, and higher plasma choline was recently reported to be associated with a greater risk of prostate cancer).

Trengle profile image

Can you point us to the study? I have been eating a Mediterranean Plant Based Diet for about 8 years with no meat some fish...and love the food! I do eat eggs and am interested in that information.

My main thing on any meat is to buy organic free range humanely treated animal meat. It has to be better for you. You are what you eat. Also I talked to an Indian elder who told me buffalo meat works against cancer. Who knows but it tastes great and is very healthy.

brubaker profile image
brubaker

My advice is to transition to eating a whole food plant based diet and eliminate all animal products, including dairy, eggs and meat. This is not an extreme diet. It is an evidence based diet and the only one proved through randomized controlled trials by Dr. Dean Ornish to slow or even reverse PSA after diagnosis. Additionally, you will feel much better!

Am I reading correctly that you were diagnosed in 2006 (13 years ago), have been eating chicken all that time, and you're still alive? Anecdotal evidence would seem to indicate that the risks of eating chicken aren't that great. :-)

Also, how much of the arachidonic acid survives being digested? Many substances in food are broken down into smaller bits before they get into general circulation. For example, most proteins are broken down to individual amino acids.

Hawk56 profile image

So, I generally agree that diet and exercise are critical in managing the side affects of our treatments but not the PCa itself.

Is your cholesterol elevated?

Do you avoid eating the chicken skin?

If arachidonic acid is harmful, why is it sold as a supplement?

Many more important things to worry over than ArAcid, in my opinion.

You might find a YouTube video with Dr. Greger interesting as he talks about studies done on choline in meats causing recurrence of prostate cancer. As for burger I believe that video said that beef was best more or less rare. If I remember correctly, Adele Davis, a health guru in the 60's felt that meats should be cooked at low temperatures over long periods of time rather than at higher temperatures to get it on the table quickly.

Free range, grass fed rather than being a source of omega 6's has conjugated linoleic acid which inhibits cancer.

I have become a vegan after reading about Ruth Heidrich. After awhile you won't miss animal products. Becoming a vegan eliminates all those concerns about animal products.

l was diagnosed with PC in December 2015 when l visited my Chinese doctor she gave me a lecture on my diet and what l should stop eating and chicken was one of the top ones as someone with PC will suffer more as chicken has the most cancer spores [ if you don’t have cancer it is ok but if you do it won’t help you problem] a lot of people on this site would say this is crazy but since l have changed l don’t regret it l now eat turkey instead also salmon & prawns with rice and about 11 vegetables in one meal [ celery - radish - mushrooms- baby corn- sweet potatoes- peppers [ only red & green] onion- carrots- sweed - aubergine- mooli with rice and madras sauce with either turkey or prawns or salmon l found hard to give up the things l had eaten for many years— beef doesn’t digest in your system very quickly [ red meat ] l also gave up cakes- chocolate- sugar [ big time ] so now all l drink is papaya tea - sweets all sweet things that you may enjoy you didn’t say what your PSA is or your Gleason mine started at 3+4 & a PSA of 6.1 6 months later 6.8 then 8.1 within 1 year so l decided to go to Prague Proton Clinic now 13.1 they weren’t to worried as they said the cancer is retained in the prostate [ stage 2] now coming up 2 years after treatment PSA 0.1 have been on Zoladex for 3 years in total soon to come off professor in Prague said PSA will rise but will stabilise l don’t regret having proton treatment have never felt so good before life was getting really bad— l hope this helps decide what’s lines to take just remember change that diet no matter what other people say you will fell better for it oh and think about Prague it is so much cheaper than the USA you won’t regret it Good Luck for the Future

My husband switched to a whole foods plant based diet on diagnosis. I do think the most important part of the diet is lots of vegetables and fruits and no processed food. He has a particularly aggressive form of prostate cancer. So we/he wants to try as hard as possible to fight it at all angles. He feels great and was able to go off of his blood pressure medications. According to what I have read the reason to reduce animal product consumption is to reduce inflammation.(Source - An inflammation Nation by Dr Sunil Pai) We are happy with this diet choice. I have watched many videos on folks who heal themselves from cancer through diet .. some of them eat farm-raised organic meat and eggs and some do not, they all seem to eat a lot of healthy food and have cut out the junk.(chips, treats..etc) If you get great joy from an occasional piece of organic chicken - I would not sweat it. Perhaps have an extra serving of broccoli when you have it. We have gotten used to not eating it. Hugs and prayers!

This thread has probably out served its usefulness and I’ve mostly tried to avoid it, however, I recently recalled a book I read many years ago, prior to my Dx, by David Servan-Schreiber, “Anti-Cancer, A New Way of Life”. As best as I can recall he had been diagnosed with an incurable brain cancer and given <1 year. He ended up living 20 years or more mostly attributed to, by his account, diet. His diet was pretty extreme as I recall. Might be worth the read for those who are concerned with diet.
