a man asked to join me at the table as I waited for my partner to bring us our hotdogs ! ! ! weeeee ~~one of my life pleasures still. He started talking about how cold it was in the store...(he was a lot older)...but then I told him about always having been hot...but that now I was on Lupron and had hotflashes that made me even hotter MOST of the time...he then said he was on Lupron. His friend came and joined him...and it turns out HE has prostate cancer also. My partner came with our hotdogs...and I said...what are the chances....a table for 4 and all 4 of us have or in the case of my partner...had...prostate cancer. It turns out the first man I was talking to was 92 years old ( he looked amazing for his age...and was EATING AN ITALIAN SAUSAGE WITH ALL THE TRIMMINGS)...AND HIS FRIEND WAS 81. It's really so common. It was great to get to talk with some people...face to face...who knew what I was talking about ! ! ! Life is Beautiful!

My husband loves those Italian sausages at Costco so I will tell him about the 92 year old.
we have sooo much fun at Costco...shopping all the aisles and eating the "taste" samples...and then we almost always have a hot dog or a brisket sandwich! It's a "simple" joy!
We don't have the brisket in Canada! Only the hotdogs and pizza.Happy thoughts.

Hot dogs??? The first thing I learned from Dr. Charles Myers was that red meat and cooking oils are like rocket fuel for prostate cancer cells. I radically changed my diet, and 10 years later am still here. The last thing you all should be eating are hot dogs, sausages or anything else cooked with high Omega 6 vegetable oils like corn oil. Dairy also: we feed our animals tons of ground corn so I switched to soy and almond milk. So all my non-stop cancer health issues (heart, weight, cholesterol, etc.) disappeared. Google the NIH studies. Pretty sure it's why I'm still here 22 years after diagnosis.
sadly...at 61..with Stage 4. and with A blasted up prostate and weakness from Lupron and Chemo....FOOD is almost all I have left really...It's been my joy ALL of my life...I started cooking at about 8 years old. That said...I have exercised...eaten vegetables and whole grains...ALL of my life...and also worshipped at the alter of "prime rib" as well...and was a vegetarian for a few years in my 20's ~~just before "blowing up to 240 pounds"...
and I'm not 100 pounds overweight..I read your profile. I think it's incredible what you did. I was about 50 pounds overweight in my 20's and I took that off and basically have stayed what people say is either "too thin" or "perfect" or (as the doctors say now..."don't lose weight"~~I feel about 10 pounds heavy....but....).
...AND if I went all vegan...I would end up at about 85 pounds...I currently weight 188 pounds. The four of us ~~two couples of strangers~~bonded over junk food (which I only buy NO nitrate and NO hormone hotdogs for home consumption~~and we don't have them very often) at Costco food court. I wouldn't trade a 1/2 hour of joy for a couple extra days on a feeding tube. I am going to look into "Diet" more...but as it stands...when people look at me ...they say "I must be doing something right". Obesity is a killer~~that I know.
After this summer...when we are planning (perhaps) our last big "grand tour" type holiday...of close to a month in Europe...I am going to look at my "numbers" and start grasping as straws...like "diet"..."voodoo" and MORE "supplements". And, speaking of supplements...all the ones I take have good things said about them...and BAD things said about them. So I am still in the "Damned if I do/Damned if I don't" stage of this journey....
and when I have a few minutes...bonding over a "hot dog" ...or a "vegan" burger....I would say that the few minutes of connection and the ability to talk about the "hot flashes" and the weakness with someone who understands....is a good thing. PLUS...this guy who was 92...had prostate cancer when. he was 67~~25 years ago....and it came back...but two decades later...and (watching him eat the sausage) I would say was not on a vegan diet all of those years...I'd tell him "he must be doing something right"...btw...he could have passed for high 60's...I was shocked when he said he was 92!
Thanks again for the diet ideas...they are in all of our minds these days...with or without Prostate Cancer...and glad to hear you're doing so well. (in case you don't see my profile) I (61 now) started out on this journey at 57 with Gleason 6...99% chance of complete fix by radiation...but, alas, my PSA did NOT go down after radiation to under 2...and I did more treatments thinking it was contained in Prostate (HIFU)... and then they discovered it was already metastasized into local bones and lymph nodes in my pelvic area. Have done Chemo over the past Christmas holiday (what a fun way to celebrate)...and most of the bone mets disappeared or shrunk to 1/2 size...and same with lymph nodes...so I will say (for me). the chemo really seemed to have worked. But even with the good results...my PSA hasn't dropped below 1.3.
My description of what it feels like to have prostate cancer is as "just like a leaf"....in a pile of other leaves...all the same...but some are caught up in the wind and soar. Some are stuck to the ground...and some get sucked up in to a lawn mower...all of our destinies seem to be "on their own course"....I am hoping to soar! Sorry this was so long. Life IS Beautiful.
You bet, brother! As a Native Noo Yawker, there are few joys greater than a nice snappy Sabrett hot-dog with all the trimmings, preferably straight out of a corner pushcart in Midtown.
I think it's important to not be so preoccupied extending our lives that we forget to live them.
No amount of Kale or Vitamin C is gonna keep ol' Grimmy from knocking at our door when it's his time to collect us at last.
You forgot that we call them "dirty water hotdogs"....(Born, raised and still a New Yorker).
In the old days those carts were run by all Greeks now they're run by people from the Middle East.

Once in awhile anything is O.K. Not my words , but the words of my nat onocologist.. a cheat day is needed once in awhile. Don’t start swimming in a pool of hot dogs and fries.. mmm fries, love those too. My problem is I love all foods. They all don’t love us back..

Thanks for that great reply, greatjohn. Our stories have a lot in common. When I was diagnosed I was addicted to my New Brunfels wood smoker and Chicago deep dish pizza. Now I tend to preach a lot about high Omega 6 fats since few doctors do. But for today, I think I'll go over to Costco and have my first non chicken hot dog in 10 years. Won't kill me! "Live long and prosper!"
Costco of course, that's where I'm taking my wife for mother's day. (Mustard, Relish, Sauerkraut and Chopped Onions - Ketchup is for sissies).

There was a time when I was eating as healthy as possible. It didn’t do much good since it evolved into stage 4 eventually. So screw it and eat what I want in reasonable amounts. Since I have mets in my spine, ribs and both femurs among other areas, my doctor said I shouldn’t be playing golf. Well, I got news for him, what time I have left I’m going live it to the fullest. Play golf and eat what I want while I still can.
Very cool. I just found out about my gig last month and found this site shortly afterwards. Very cool people on here. Must have been heart warming to be with 4 people in our boat in person. I would find it hard to fight off tears if I didn't crack dirty jokes and sarcastic remarks about the condition... lol.
Anyways, read some of your posts and enjoyed them. I'm still a noob at this crap. Having mine cut out in a couple of weeks.
