Megase

My dad has been in the hospital for 12 days now with a salmonella infection.

His appetite has vanished and the doctors are suggesting Megase.

Anyone have experience with this medicine?

It's an artificial progestin - sometimes given as a patch for hot flashes. It's known for increasing appetite. If you're in a state that has medical marijuana, that should work too.

They prescribed it to my wife after open heart valve replacement last year when she could not eat anything. When comparing it's success with her condition to that of cannabis, the cannabis stimulated her appetite much better than the Magace did. She took an edible gummy of 10mg THC every morning and every afternoon, and it got her to eat at least two decent meals a day.

My wife almost completely lost her appetite after a stroke. Her doctor prescribed Megace and her appetite improved greatly. No negative side effects that I observed.

That complete lose of appetite is deadly for us. I’m glad that she pulled out of that..

I've heard some alarming things about Megace and Prostate cancer. Here's a quote I snagged from a previous post on this site:

Adding to NOT prescribing Megace is this commentary by Dr. A. Oliver Sartor, another physician who specializes in research and treatment of recurring and advanced prostate cancer:

“"Megace® is used at times for patients who have hot flashes, and at times for patients to boost their appetite. But in prostate cancer, Megace may interact with the androgen receptor, particularly mutants, and cause excessive cancer growth. And you can actually get responses by withdrawing Megace. I do not prescribe the use of Megace in prostate cancer patients. "

If you have access to Marijuana, I would go that route.

Megace , that doesnt sound promising.

How did he get salmonella? If you don’t mind me asking.. ?. Chipotle has had problems and now many are getting sick from romaine grown in Yuma Az.

I wish we knew. He actually fell and went to the hospital. We all assumed it was just from the cancer. He had been weak for several days. At the hospital, they found that he was in septic shock from salmonella. Spent 12 days there and was released. He never seemed to improve at home. We took him back to the hospital 12 days ago and he still had salmonella. It has been awful.

To Damusolf , frightening to say the least. My immunity is down also. A small, sticker in my finger turned to strep , tongue swoll up . Anti-biotics took it out. Thank god.. Bacteria’s and infections are the deadly foes.. Is he still in the Hospital now??? if so ! I pray that he get s out quickly ... I don’t have the words or answers. I just think that he is not alone with you by his side. No greater love than yours .... for your Dad... peace to you both... Keep, your strength up too please...

I have been taking Magace for 7 1/2 years and cancer stayed at bay for over six years. Im thinking if magace dose promote cancer growth i would have a reoccurance much sooner. Just my 2 cents.

Right now he is eating okay without any intervention. We have medical marijuana on hand if needed. I think we will go that route first.
