Coffee and PCa question

snoraste profile image

There’s a lot of research (albeit a bit confusing) on the positive impact of higher coffee intake (3 cups or more) in PREVENTION of prostate cancer. (The confusing part is that it’s not good for you if you have BPH.)

Anyone knows of any research for post-diagnosis?

2014 meta-analysis [1]:

"For fatal PCa, we observed a statistically significant 11% reduced PCa mortality ... for every 3 cups/day increase in coffee consumption".

Just read thru the article. The sample size is extremely small. I’m not sure how much credence I can give it.

I did not quite follow that Patrick. The quoted reduction is over a control group who did not drink so much coffee or what ? Or it over a period say 5 years. Shall be grateful for an explanation. I want o follow your therapy!

So, my reading is that you the get the 11% advantage if you drink 3 cups versus none, 4 cups versus 1, 5 cups versus 2, etc.

More is always better.

I am drinking my 2nd mug as I type. My mug of strong coffee might be equivalent to 2 cups. Sometimes I manage a third mug, but there is only so much I can drink.

Best, -Patrick

“A cup of coffee” is not very well defined. Is there a difference between light and dark roast? How about the strong vs diluted coffee? It appears that decaf vs regular doesn’t make that much of a difference.

I’m also fairly certain that the benefits cannot be linear with consumption - drinking 50 cups doesn’t cure you. But I do get he message. Drinking a couple of “cups” of coffees a day could be beneficial for PCa.

"Cup" in studies makes me wary. How many ounces in a median cup? More to the point - how many scoops of coffee in the average cup?

How much milk? Casein binds to polyphenols & makes then unavailable. Coffee study results may vary by culture due to milk usage.

I haven't read all the posts, but I know there has been some forum discussion about coffee in the last few days. This article also seems to suggest coffee is good for us PCa warriors. It may be pure confirmation bias on my part, but I like that conclusion and will keep drinking coffee. Go team!

(apologies if this has already been posted and discussed)

I have looked at dozens of studies that show coffee is good for preventing PCa. But, unfortunately, I haven't run across many that show it is good for treating existing PCa. Regardless, I drink a few cups - a pleasure.

I drink about 30 oz of black coffee a day. Did not help me not get metastatic disease. I am not counting on it by its self to keep me alive.

Thanks noirhole. I don’t think anyone is looking for a coffee monotherapy. Would’ve been nice though! It’s just a game of lowering odds as much as possible to get extended on the right side of the OS curve.

If its true prostate cancer could not get within a thousand miles of me with all the coffee i drank. I was a railroader and drank coffee all the time due to the odd hours we all work. I had to stop when i got lumps in my breast that hurt. I was surprised it was the caffine. We hear so much about things that cure or prevent. I think its more of a well balanced lifestyle more than anything.

I quit coffee upon dx. Stomach is better off. I prefer matcha tea , but once in awhile give me a dui espresso ya!

As long as I wake up every morning looking at the grass and not the dirt, I will enjoy my daily cup. What other reason for living is there, anyway?

:)

in reply toDS_WAVL

I live for coffee. I just roasted some yesterday, should be ready to use tomorrow.

It seems to me it all depends on who is funding the study. One year coffee is bad the next year coffee is good. I hate the idea big corporations are usually the ones paying for the studies either directly or indirectly. And even if the government conducts the study they don't go against the interests of big business either. Most of the universities are dependent on large corporations so they are not to be trusted either.

Joe and Curly ask, Hey Mo why does our coffee taste like mud? Mo says you guys are so stupid, cause it was ground this morning.

Good Luck and Good Health.

The issue with looking at a single food or nutrient, is that there are ALWAYS good and bad aspects. Each of us has to judge the study value by our own PERSONAL situation.

I have been on lupron for 6 years with some minor damage to my rectum from proton radiation treatment. Various doctors have recommended Miralax. I have been taking it on and off for the last 4 years. I take only half the dose recommended on the bottle. Both my gastroenterologist and my urologist say they have seen no long term side effects in their patients. Miralax continues to work for me
