Xtandi and depression

My father has been on Xtandi for almost a month, he is now beginning to get depressed and lack of wanting to try. It’s almost like he is giving up because he has “Cancer” and “what am I going to do about it” . I try and explain to him that he needs to be positive and fight and go and enjoy life each day because he has no pain no aches no symptoms- just cancer in almost all his nodes through this body... I don’t want him to give up! What can I do?

Suggestions?

Hi there,

I've noticed my dad appears to be a little "cloudy" himself on Xtandi but seems to be more aware the closer we get to night time. He takes his before bed. What time does your dad take his?

At night before bed. He was taking it in the afternoon but it became difficult because he would forget to take with him when he left the house during the day.

When he was taking it in the noon time he didn’t have these symptoms but that was also when he first started taking them

I’m afraid they will end up giving him another medication and he already is so miserable with what he has to take.. he hated these pills and I keep reminding him that other options are far worse.

I know how hard it is not to want to make them try everything but I would say...Just be careful pushing him because for some, the side effects can be so debilitating and others have none so they don't understand it but quality of life should be their choice. Best wishes.

Does he have a fitness club membership? Is he able to work out? I've found that going to the gym several times a week gets me out of the house and I believe that exercising and staying fit is good for the mind and the soul as well as the body. It also helps in falling asleep at night. Best wishes, not an easy situation for you.

No he doesn’t but he walks with my mom daily and gardens. I asked him about if he was interested in exercising at the gym. He said he is ok with just walking.

This was a long time ago, he has since done chemo and failed and now has been on Zytiga for 13 days . His PSA went from 23 to 80 in 4 weeks and then 80-98 after 2 weeks . Thursday he will go have it checked to see if Zytiga is working.
