It's no longer experimental! The first academic medical center in the nation to offer FDA-approved high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) as a treatment for prostate cancer, USC's Keck Medical, Institute of Urology physicians are able to precisely target and destroy prostate cancer in a minimally invasive, outpatient procedure. With a patient under general anesthetic, the HIFU probe is introduced into the body and the ultrasound beam is aimed at the prostate. There is no radiation or blood loss so patients are able to recover with minimal side effects and much quicker than traditional prostate surgery.
