This is not the end. I've had nearly twenty years of treatment.

OK not everyone is the same, you might get 30 years!

I know exactly how you feel. I was diagnosed three years ago with advanced metastatic prostate cancer. My initial PSA was an extremely high 744, and the cancer had spread to pelvic lymph glands, spine and sacrum.

It is devastating at first to learn that we have cancer, and prostate cancer affects us more than any other cancer. My urologist told me that my cancer is "treatable, but incurable." The key word is "treatable."

Many guys with advanced PCa can have a very good quality of life for a very long time with the new treatments available, and the new immunotherapy treatments that have been coming online have shown great promise.

You are not alone, there are others going through the same thing as you, and one of the most important parts of treatment is to maintain a positive attitude, to get support, such as on this site, and to do your homework, looking into the various treatment options.

I began ADT (androgen deprivation therapy) in November, 2012. My doctor put me on Firmagon, bicalutamide and Xgeva. The ADT shrank the prostate tumor and lymph glands and stabilized the bone metastases. You can look at my profile and read what has happened over the past three years.

You haven't stated your PSA, Gleason score and where your metastases are, but I assume that they are not as extensive as my own----I was very advanced when diagnosed, and I'm still here with a reasonably good quality of life, although it has restricted my activities considerably.

You are unboubtedly scared, which is normal and natural. And it isn't easy---there are many decisions about what treatment course to take, but beginning treatment is important, to get the cancer under control as soon as possible.

And if I can cope with this cancer, you can too.

You have my best wishes,

CERICWIN (Eric, to my friends).

Wonderful reply Eric right on point. Positive attitude, remember every "body" different, and the most important- no one is going to work harder to keep you healthy except yourself.

I know how you feel too, I was diagnosed with high grade metastatic to distant sites in my skeleton almost 10 years ago at age 49, They called me at home 3 days later and told me I better get my things in order because I probably would die in a year. I did all the research I could, found good Doctors and learned all I could. It is important to read as much as you can, understand your disease, keep records, and do not let it bring you down, try to take time to forget about cancer and do other things. Support groups help, get busy living!

Dan

What was your Gleason score? I have had cancer for 3 years and doing good now. 45 radiation treatments and hormone ablation shots every 6 months. Not able to have sex but I am 78 and I would rather live. Any other questions are welcome. Jack

After Elgie's surgery for radical prostatectomy. The urologist told me in the waiting room.....if he didn't get all of the cancer that Elgie may have 5 years. They did not get all of the cancer and that was 12 years ago. Had I not found Chuck and everyone in the yahoo advanced prostate cancer group.....I believe he may have been correct. You or your wife or partner or whomever...........do your own research and be your own advocate please. I am not the brightest crayon in the box but with the help of everyone........I have been able to help my husband. My husband would not be doing this on his own.

Jackie, You are pure gold in my box of crayons, and Elgie's so lucky to have you.
