Hi, all. Thanks for this forum. I’ve been on a year-long journey of self-discovery after my sister and nephew were diagnosed with ADHD. Like many, I thought ADHD meant bouncy elementary school boys. When I finally stumbled on a list of adult female inattentive/combined-type symptoms, I broke down and bawled for a good while. Then I got to work obsessively reading books and medical literature, listening to podcasts, lectures, TED Talks, etc, on ADHD. At age 39, I feel like my life has FINALLY come into focus.
But now that I know what flavor of help I need, I am totally paralyzed. The stories of people being dismissed by healthcare professionals has be terrified to walk in anywhere with my reams of notes about why I think this is the diagnosis I need.
TLDR: has anyone been on this journey in the Austin, TX area? Can anyone recommend a primary care provider and/or a psychiatrist who is willing to listen to adults and their concerns that they might have ADHD? Where did you get diagnosed and how did it go? Did you find a good therapist in the area once you were diagnosed who was able to support you with cognitive behavioral therapy, etc? What meds are working for you, etc? Any specifics y’all are willing to share would be so helpful. Thank you!

Hey there...I am in way North Austin...like pay RRISD taxes but Austin address and trash etc. My psych is through the Seton Mind Institute & they do everything there or within their network...done CBT and psych there...have had rough patches so familiar with some of the more acute places etc...it has taken a long time for me to find all this info out cause every place/ resource guide seems to say something different. Please let me know if you have any questions!
Thanks for the info! That place is not on my radar yet. Was that where you got your official ADHD diagnosis? Are there any particular therapists there you would recommend for CBT? Glad you were able to find somewhere that works for you.
Welcome to my world! I’m in Austin and worked with James Ochoa for a few years after my diagnosis at 45. He helped me through many life changes and offered individual and group therapy. He was recommended to me by my psychiatrist, Bernard Cordoba.
Thank you! I will look up both of those names now. I know I have to eventually bite the bullet and choose someone to see instead of endlessly collating data. 🤪 But it is makes me feel much better to get word-of-mouth recommendations vs cold calling numbers on websites. Appreciate you taking the time to respond and share your info.
