Hi Cyd! I was diagnosed at 22 so I cant really help answer your question but I wanted to share this video from Rick Green from ADD and Loving It-- He was diagnosed later in life and had a remarkable story which I thought you'd appreciate!

Good luck with your medication journey if I can answer any of your questions please let me know!!

Best,

Rachel

Diagnosed at 59, Been on meds for 5 years. My psychiatrist wanted to try non-stimulant options first, so I have been on the generic equivalent of Strattera, and it works well for me. I believe my ADHD might be considered "mild" compared to some people. But it has helped with focus, and my bigger problem of blurting out things before thinking them through, affecting interpersonal relationships (especially my marriage).

Hi Cyd,

I second the endorsement of Rick Green and Totally ADD. His information is solid, presented with humor, and his site is self-sustaining, not taking money from Big Pharma. His video series about ADHD meds is worth the cost.

I am 69, self diagnosed with ADHD about age 60. Even in southern California, with many options for healthcare providers, It took me until last year to find a doc willing to prescribe any stimulant. Adderall, 10mg 2x a day. And it is working! I can plan long term projects and actually follow through on them, for example.

Do not give up on getting the care you need. The standard excuse for not prescribing stimulants in the US (even before you get Medicare) is, well you are old and it could raise your blood pressure. I heard that over and over. And over. After begging, and proving that my BP has been in the 110-120/70 range for years I finally got a doc willing to go against the Medicare guidelines.

Good luck, and hope this post is useful,

Joan
