ADHD Treatments - New here! :)

Hello! I was recently diagnosed with ADHD (combined type), and I'm currently trying to figure out which treatment route I should take. Before I decide I want to know alllll the options out there. I'm hoping you might be able to share what's worked for you?

Also, are there other medications besides Adderall and ritalin that are used as treatments for ADHD? Are there medications out there that will help, but not increase the chance of triggering other mental health issues that weren't previously present?

Thanks!!

Great questions!

I’m literally in the exact same boat. I’ve got an appointment with the psychiatrist on the 9th to talk about treatment options

I applaud you for looking for alternative medication or therapies. If I could, I would not take anything, but that is not an option for me. But please do not be afraid of Adderall.

I was diagnosed when I was in my late 30's have tried several different medications with therapy. But I was not getting better. I had been depressed, or so the Dr. thought, but eventually after confessing to my therapist how bad my thoughts were getting, she prescribed me Adderall. Three days later, depression was gone, anxiety was better, and I have the focus and energy that I remember as a young person.

I have been taking Adderall and other medication along with working with my therapist for over 6 years.

I work with people with addiction/recovery so I am very aware of the seriousness of the addictiveness of Adderall. But for us that do not think with an addictive brain and maintained with doctors monitor.

Good luck,

I have tried Vyvanse and Adderall I had better luck with vyvnase as it is made for adults. But when my insurance changed I could not afford the vyvanse. Adderall is great because you can do short release or extended release this way you can play with it. Some people only need the medication to work or for schooling so the short release is fantastic since you could take it before a big meeting or project or when you want to spend a few hours cleaning. then you can also take it a couple of times a day but unfortunately medication is always a gamble you may find that neither work for you, it is definitely trial and error. I suggest finding yourself a good psychiatrist do NOT depend on a doctor to help you find the right medication.

I am a combined type as well but I also struggle with narcolepsy so I have to take a stronger dosage than most. the key is being honest with the psychologist you choose.
