Succeeding in college when you have ADD/ADHD

When I went back to school at 50, I found help by telling them I had ADD, which is a disability, I found out they have help so you can graduate. I went to JFK University in Pleasant Hill, CA. I was allowed to tape all my lectures, which I did. If I had trouble taking notes, I could ask for help and they would find a student in my class that would share their notes with me.This was a little awkward for me because their notes made no sense to me most of the time. I was allowed to sit up front in each class to keep distractions to a minimum. This helped me a lot. They had an office where I could go to take tests to keep detractions at a minimum, and I was allowed extra time to finish. I chose to take the tests in the classroom, but I also used the extra time if I could not finish in time. They had a counselor to help me if I needed it and also a few students who had ADD to coach me when I needed it. Plus a few other things that I don't remember. All these things were a great help and I ended up getting A's'. I still had to study a lot, much more than usual. I also loved the classes I took, which I know helped a lot. These aids were all free, but you did have to prove you had ADD, which meant my doctor had to fill out a form confirming my ADD.

I was very impressed with their program, it was created by people who were knowledgeable about ADD. This was my first and only time I found help with my disability. I hope they are still doing this and it is available at all `schools and universities.

Thats an amazing story! Props to you for doing what is best for yourself. For a while I cared about what people thought of me, but then I realized who cares what they think if I need extra time and I’m not they’re with everyone taking the test since I need to take it in a different room with less distraction. This is a great message for everyone: DO WHAT IS BEST FOR YOURSELF AND EVERYTHING MORE THAN LIKELY WILL FALL INTO PLACE :)

Good for you! Everyone else is too involved with their own dramas to pay attention to you. Once you understand this you will find a new freedom in life! IT's mind altering!
