evaluation for adhd gotta go have done
Oh, my. You are at the beginning of a very long journey. The "crazy" label is one you have placed on yourself to explain what your life has been like up until now. You are not crazy. Go get the testing done and come back to visit with us.
The doctor might be looking for someone who understands ADHD better than a medical doctor might understand the condition.
That said be CAREFUL and research the medical center. Unfortunately I have found many scam artists targeting those with ADHD and pushing all kinds of unapproved therapies. One place near me is pushing spinal manipulation as a cure for ADHD? Um - what?! What study showed that?! I have read a lot of studies on ADD and ADHD and I have yet to read any of them recommending spinal manipulation as an effective treatment. Good luck and don't be afraid to ask the medical center questions.
Perhaps it depends upon where you live. There are numerous professionals that do it. In Wisconsin - there is someone who sees you one time and then can do the rest via phone or online conversations. He's licensed in other states - but his office is here.
If yo don't mind me asking who do you see? You can reply privately it you want. I live in Madison and believe it or not I am having a hard time finding someone who is really good with ADHD. My daughter and I both have it. The Dr. we were seeing is at a different clinic now and are insurance does not go there. Any ideas? Love to here from you.
They most likely send everyone there for testing. I would guess it has to do with resources. I just recently went through testing and it overwhelmed me too. I felt "crazy" and "stupid" at the time. It is just a hump you have to get over. It is sooooo worth it!!!!!
do they have you answer questions on paper or ask you questions,in person? i have to read a ? a few times caz my mind is wandering off, what kinds of ? do they ask?
I took a TOVA test. Not sure if you will take it. On the computer, just clicking. About 20 minutes. Then I did IQ test for a few hours. That was hard. I had no coffee that day because they told me I couldn't. It was brutal and I felt like a moron afterwards. I made jokes to my husband that "they" are going to take our kids away and ship me off to a mental hospital. However, it was all in my head. It was intimidating and overwhelming at the time, but worth it. I googled stuff too and tried to figure out why they would need to do an IQ test. As an ADHD adult that has lived a life of undiagnosed ADHD, I am very sensitive to judgement. I am not sure if you are the same. This journey is worth it. Trust me.
o my yes i am very sensitive to judgement, i dnt think i can stay still long enuff to do a test
Have you ever been tested in any other way then the computer test? I did a 4 day testing series 2 times with someone that does it the old school way. No computers, She said it is more accurate. I did it that way, then with the computer and the results were different. I am curious about your experience
I am note sure how accurate the TOVA test is. I would have thought I could have "beat" it because of the testing situation. It isn't exactly like I would get distracted or anything. However, results came back positive for ADHD. That was the only computer part. As for the IQ test, it was all by hand. I scored average for working memory and another category (can't remember, ha!), but scored above average on everything else. She said that the 2 categories of average are "ADHD" centered. So, yes, I have ADHD. I was unsure how an IQ test would work for this. I would think that trying to read a book in a noisy restaurant or do logic puzzles with beeping in the background would be the only test they would need, haha! What kind of testing did you do? Was the computer test the TOVA?
