I'm thrilled to get here.

When I explain about my daughter's ADHD, almost all Japanese people ask me, "What's ADHD?" Unfortunately, this is the reality in Japan. I want to change this environment in Japan. We don't have much information about developmental disability in Japanese. That's why I'm here to learn about ADHD in English.

Look up you tube channels “adhd_love” and “how to adhd”. Basically our bodies don’t make the right balance of chemicals in our brain and it makes us different in a few ways. One of my favorite analogies is that our attention is not a deficit as the name seems. We don’t fully choose what takes our attention, but it is either 0% or 100% like a light switch. We seek out activities that give our brains dopamine.

You can tell them it’s like a hormone imbalance or thyroidism but for attention to tasks. I would think they have those issues out there. My thyroidism fluctuates similar to attention but it’s a bit slower of a change than our afhd behaviors. I almost want to say it’s like our brains didn’t prune enough or the right neural pathways and we want all of them firing, even though some are not beneficial to fire. You can also see if you can purchase the newest dsm or show them sites like ADDitude magazine.

Hello MIKIKO_Japan,

I would recommend the book ADHD 2.0 by Dr. Hallowell and Dr. Ratey. I can't find if it has been translated into Japanese but it is a wealth of information about the brain science of ADHD and overviews the basics of what it means to have ADHD.

It is an easy read and is available on Amazon - here in the states, at least.

I hope that helps,

Full disclosure: I am an ADHD Parent Coach and I work with parents, young adults and adults to support them as they explore the world of ADHD. I have been married to ADHD for nearly 30 years and have raised two kids with ADHD.
