We are at our wit's end as what to do to help our 17 year old son with ADHD, anxiety and substance abuse who has taken to running away repeatedly now. It is clear we need to remove him from this environment and get him concentrated treatment. Our preference is an outdoor behavioral health program. Does anyone have a son who has attended one? Would you please share your/his experience? How do you possibly afford these programs? And any recommendations for a therapeutic educational consultant who has great knowledge about these outdoor treatment options?

SOAR has an “academy”, which is based in Balsam, NC. Our son has attended their summer camp several times. It’s a great environment. Soar specializes in working with kids/teens with adhd, learning challenges, and social struggles.
Their academy runs from Sept-May like a regular school year, but classes are brought outdoors for half of the month. It is pricey ($50k/yr) but there may be some type of financial aid. We’ve thought about it for our son from time to time. Not sure if this is what you were talking about, but I just wanted to put it out there, in case you’d never heard of it.
Good luck. 💝
We sent our son to a residential facility in southern Utah. He did not have a substance abuse problem, but was also running off, etc. However, we also have a friend who used Eagle Ranch in Utah for her son, who DID have a serious abuse problem. I would be happy to chat with you.
