Hi everyone, Can anyone recommend a speed reading or reading comprehension program for teens? My senior is gifted but in his neuropsychological testing it was noted that his processing speed and working memory was three standard deviations below the rest of his cognitive ability. We never thought anything of it because it was listed as “above average” but new psychiatrist said this was a “significant learning disability” for him. I know he reads VERY slow and that college will be a nightmare if he doesn’t learn to get through materials faster and with better comprehension. Any suggestions? Thanks so much

Your son could really benefit from working with a learning specialist. They are both in the school district and private. They train in school in ways to help children with learning. Children are not trained to read (learn where to place there eyes when reading). There are many tips that a specialist can help your son with. He may also benefit from hearing the material while looking at the print. The are special programs that download and read printed material ( textbooks, novels, etc) to help people who struggle to read. One resource is Bookshare.org
One of the things the specialist can work on is increasing comprehension and rate of understanding, once he knows how to read. It’s not about reading rate it is about understanding what he is reading while reading.
Hope these help.
