The most studied and effective classroom intervention, Pax Good Behavior Game, uses brief physical activities as rewards several times a day. This not only gives kids a break from sitting all day long, it actively gets the kids excited, e.g. doing the chicken dance for 30 seconds. When the reward is done, the kids have to sit back down and return to working, thereby exercising their self-control circuits of the prefrontal cortex. Pax GBG is the only intervention that actually allows kids tp practice self-control and self-regulation, which is why clinical studies have shown amazing improvements in everything from increasing grades to reducing substance abuse years later. The study below used stickers and smiley faces instead of physical activity rewards but still showed great results. Other studies using Pax GBG were even more effective. Google Pax GBG and Dr. Dennis Embry.
