Did you know 1 out of 3 students don't get the help they need in the classroom. It could be your child who is struggling and could benefit from an IEP or 504 Plan.

How could school district better work with families to make sure students have the accommodations they need? You can learn more about the research at bit.ly/nrcnotgettingaccommo... .

Karen- this looks like a great article but the link is not working for me.. I got a 404 error.

Can you see if it works for you? If so, not sure how I can access it.

Thanks

This article is, unfortunately, not surprising. In the 5 years since my son was diagnosed with inattentive type ADHD, we have had an uphill battle to secure accommodations for him. The teachers have become very adept at finding ways to circumvent the accommodations that we have been successful in adding to his 504 plan. Most recently, we were candidly advised by an administrator that the counseling service people with whom we are required to work to construct the 504 plan are members of the same "collective bargaining" unit as the teachers who will be required to follow the plan and they, therefore, feel a great deal of pressure not to be perceived as making more work for the teachers. I have found that persistence pays off (3 meetings seems to be the magic number at my son's school; at the 3rd meeting, our reasonable requests are always granted). I will pass on the best advice that I received from my special education law consultant before our first Section 504 committee meeting: "always be the adult in the room." This is surprisingly easy to do. The teachers will try almost anything to avoid what they perceive as additional work necessitated by a 504 plan, but remember that you know your child best and, regardless of what they may tell you, you may be the only person in the meeting whose only motivation is what is best for your child. Hang in there!
