We have been through so many different meds. Currently trying adderall 20 mg (13 yrs old) but she gets tics. So her Psychiatrist prescribed risperidone to take at night (1 mg)
which has not helped with her tics but doesn help her to fall asleep.
I feel we should try something else as this isn't doing what it should after all this time. I would like to try ritalin again as she did that when she was in first grade ( it made her a rock and so we stopped) but maybe now she is older and may respond different.
He doesn't want to change a thing.
Should we switch doctors? I don't know is it normal to take risperidone which is a really strong drug

If he/she isn't open to trying other drugs then yes, id switch. We do Seroquel, like risperidone but to tame her anger. We also do Vvyanse. Our experience with Ritalin was pretty awful. It made my daughter crash so hard coming off, that we had to try something else. I read about Vvyanse and actually suggested it, to which the doctor was responsive. Its really a partnership, and you have to come to the doctor with ideas and justifications. If they don't want to listen, time to move on. Good luck!!
