Hello, My 5 year old daughter was just diagnosed with ADD. I am needing some advise and input from parents that are going through the same thing. I took her to her pediatrician because I have gotten several emails that my daughter is has been banned from painting because she paints all over her body and whatever else she can get her hands on, she rolls all over the floor, has been spacy, completely checked out at school, etc. The email was really intense. I knew she was hyperactive but she is my only child and they only child I have been around and didn't really think a whole lot about it. She is very smart and already knows what she needs to inorder to go to Kindergarden. She is currently in Pre-K. The doctor says we do not have to medicate since she isn't failing school and is still learning. But he hates that the teacher is already excluding her from activities and is worried that could effect her self-esteem. So I have two options, do not medicate and fight with the school and teachers or medicate during school hours. I just feel 5 is so young. Just needing some advice! Thank you!

Have you asked her pediatrician to refer you to a behavioral therapist? I am going through a lot of the same stuff, 5 yo boy, very smart and exceptional learner, but teachers complaining about him being "out of control". I am going to see his pediatrician tomorrow and he is giving me a referral to behavioral therapist. Also, omega 3 fish oil, vitamin zinc magnesium supplements, and essential oils can/may be helpful. If you have a formal diagnosis of ADD/ADHD, she qualifies for an IEP if the PreK she is attending is funded by the school system. Tell the principal/Director that you want her placed on a IEP, and they will outline where they feel she is lacks my skills and will make recommendations to help. You can also request that they add in things like “will not be excluded” and push for fairness. Invite your pediatrician if you think he will help. Good luck.
Get an actual neuropsychological evaluation. That will help you navigate the school system and give recommendations as to services for your child. If you’re not ready for medications that is fine. You have to want to go that route and can’t be pushed. Good luck!
