Accommodation success

Hi everyone! I have a sixth grader who is ADD and dyslexic and he's been struggling so hard with math this year. Part of it is that he doesn't want to "feel different" so he doesn't USE his 504 accommodations. He got to a point where he was failing every single math test and getting so frustrated he wanted to give up. His teacher suggested he use an accommodation during the test that he had never tried. He went across the hall with some other kids and had someone read the test orally while he also had it in front of him. He was SO EXCITED to text me later that he got a B+! It was like the stars aligned for him and he realized accommodations can WORK. I just had to share the success here because other people just don't get it- how exciting it is when your child passes after trying so hard. I hope it's not a fluke and that it will work this well for every test. Thanks for letting me share.

What type of accommodations does he had?

He has many accommodations through his 504 plan. US law accommodates ADHD kids under the American with Disabilities Act so with evaluation and diagnosis, schools are required to make appropriate accommodations based on your child's needs. My son has extra time on tests, shortened homework assignments, and having the test read out loud to him. He also is allowed to use audio books and I am allowed to type for him on large assignments, as long as he is doing the work. They also can not remove points for things like spelling. Checkout Understood organization, Wrights Law, and IDEA.

Good luck! I feel like we are always changing things up and trying what works best. What can be frustrating is the constant push to advocate for him. I feel like parents really need to try and stay on top of the school and sometimes it's so overwhelming. Sometimes I just want to be MOM- not educational advocate.

This forum us very helpful it always helped me.He was diagnosed with mild learning disability and dvlopemntal delays in prek 4 not yet Officially diagnosed with adhd but i see signs in him i got a date from neuro in june .

My son is currently first grade INCLUSION full time now His 3rd marking period started today . He was out of country for some emergency family vacations from sep to dec 2017 and he joined back school in first grade in dec 2017

School put my son in full time self contained in kindergarten in SEP 2016 by putting pressure on me that they have no other option or leave school without even trying accommodations and it was like a cold fight between me and social worker, I also was unaware of my rights at that time ,then I raise my voice at IEP and even contacted special ed director they helped me alot then.

otherwise he had no behaviourial issues other than smtimes he get lil silly or laughing dont know how to make friends also hes getting speech and ot and showed alot of improvement .

This year they put him in first grade inclusion and hes getting support but at recent IEP iep meeting

I feel they want to put him back in self contained as he is not doing much good in maths and comprehension reading

PLEASE ADVICE Me

He pass his weeklie special tests of his modified levels but in alternate week of test of main curriculum maths he fails in one marking period in english and also teacher put his maths marks up bybtaking quizess .Is such student is liable to follow core curriculum as well in maths and in english what could be his rights .

I am praying I dn want to put him again in self contained because he was regressing in social behaviours .All day he spent with some serious behaviour kids as well and restricted environment.

He is very good reader and good in writing as well he is very loving nice boy .

Now in inclusion hes is very happyy but not doing good in major subjects and some times he lost in his world he knows the answer but dn speak sometimes .

Also i am going to evaluate him from neuro independently if he have adhd or not in newjersey.

Because smtimes schools rush to give labels

Also i give risperidone to my son for focus problem he have smtimes i got it from my native country

It sounds like you have a good working relationship with the IEP team. I would ask them what accommodation ideas they have for him for math. If he is doing so well socially in the Inclusion program can they just pull him out for math services and he can spend the rest of the time in Inclusion?

Thank you for this piece of information. Being able to type for my daughter is of great help for all of us. It takes her 10 hours to write an essay on the computer over 5 day period. So frustrating. I’m going to discuss that with her teachers.

This sounds so much like my fifth grade son. He hates to look different, but is failing miserably in math this year. It was always his favorite subject and easy for him. He just can’t seem to get better than a D on any test. I work at the school and am in constant contact with the teachers, but all I get is he’s struggling. Well no $&%#. Lol

What are you doing to help? Basically nothing because they don’t want to help one kid over another, which really makes me mad. So every time we talk or meet it’s the same thing, he can’t concentrate and he’s struggling. I can’t seem to make them understand he just needs a little extra help, like reading it to him. Instead I get, well we can’t spend that much time with one kid. 😡 There’s only 14 kids in his class!!

It’s nice to hear your son is doing better with that one small adjustment. It makes me feel justified that something like that CAN help my son and that I should continue to fight for it!

Absolutely! Does your son have a 504 or an IEP? If not I would request one immediately. If he has an ADHD diagnosis then you are ahead of the game, if not, they can evaluate him and it qualifies him for academic accommodations under the law. Specific accommodations can be written into it like having the test supplied orally, extra time on tests, shortened assignments, etc. Sometimes schools will suggest evaluation, but sometimes not. It is your right by law to request evaluation for an IEP or 504. Check out Wrights Law and IDEA.

That's wonderful and such a wonderful feeling for your son. His confidence went up already.

I have a question , was your son diagnosed with processing that's why they verbally said the problem to him? I have been telling g his teachers thT..y son may have processing and trying to get the school to test him but haven't had luck.
