Hi everyone- my son and I just got back from a physiatrist visit. We have recently started the medication metadate and have seen positive changes in my son at school by myself and his teacher. He has been in the medication a month now. The nurse weighed him today and he has lost 3 pounds since being on the medication. Which wasn’t surprising to the doctor, she says that this is common. However I worry about his weight loss. He is a very picky eater as it is and I don’t want him to lose more weight. He doesn’t always eat his lunch at school but usually eats ok when he is home. And he also plays a lot of soccer but he is off for November and December but back to it in January. Also, he still does have some impulse issues at home and at school after the medicine wears off. It’s hard to get his homework done in the evening at times because he get sidetracked so easily. He also does some work at home that he refuses to do at school because he wants to play so we finish it at home.( this only happens a few times a month). The psychiatrist recommended that we add a non stimulant at night that lasts 24 hours to help with the impulse control. I told her that I just want to keep things as they are for now because it seems like a lot to keep up. Does anyone have any experience with weight loss or this non stimulant medication? Maybe I should and an extra snack time for him in his 504 plan that I am currently working on fir the next parent teacher meeting. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks😊

Thanks for replying ! My son is 5 and a half and weighs 45 lbs now. I feel kids this young can’t afford to lose this kind of weight (3 lbs in one month) when usually they only gain a few pounds per year. I’m going to look into higher caloric snacks maybe protein bars or some ensure shakes if he won’t eat at all at school. But they have to try the packed lunch or maybe let him choose what he wants in hot lunch. The problem comes in when he’s at school they don’t really monitor his eating so I’m going to put it in his 504 plan. Also, have you had any experience with the non- stimulant medications? My sons psychiatrist said that they don’t have these kind of side effects but I’m sure that they have others. Anyways thanks for your help!😊
