I have three children from 11-16. All three have some form of adhd. My oldest is more of the classic form. Without medicine he's impulsive, reactive, and can't concentrate. He's been taking daytrana patch and short acting tenex with a good deal of success. My older daughter had the diagnosis of adhd,now...it's not as typical. Her main diagnosis is mood dysregulation. Typical adhd med never really worked for her. She took sa teens for awhile, but always claimed it didn't make her feel good. She currently takes lexapro. It helps, in that she's not as combative...but is against trying anything else. She's not doing as well in school, and although I think it's due to concentration issues, she won't try anything else. My youngest daughter has adhd and tourette's. She used to be on the patch, sa tenex combo, but was struggling to keep it together in school. We switched to long acting tenex and that was met with horrible results. It didn't seem to work for her initially. We increased it, and it made her act out more. She was up all night, couldn't rest, kept awake with anxious thoughts. We had to taper her off of it, enduring more sleepless nights. She's currently on vyvanse, but not long enough to tell you if it's working. We've learned what works for one, doesn't work for the others, what works today may not work next week. Pharmaceuticals constantly need adjusting, it's unfortunately not a fast and easy fix. Continue to do your due diligence and research (with a healthy bit of skepticism).
We learned that getting proper sleep helps all three...which is hard bc...teenagers!
Good luck
I cant imagine having 3 with ADHD! I'm not thrilled putting her on meds at 7 yrs old but I really cant see an alternative. I am happy that he chose something besides a stimulant though since Ive read they wear off and makes things worse in cases. She is a great sleeper and I'm hoping it stays that way. I have been getting all the information I can but it can be so overwhelming especially since I'm on Lexapro myself for Post partum that hasn't gone away since she was born. Your daughter probably cant concentrate from the med since I'm extremely forgetful and cant think like I used to before starting. I tried to wean off but within 3 days I was having anxiety attacks. Thanks for the feedback
Never had that specific diagnosis, but most people with ADHD probably qualify for a diagnosis of at least one mood disorder. In a lot of cases, the mood disorder is caused by the ADHD, or rather, it's caused by the fact that ADHD kids are treated so badly. I mean, can you imagine being punished every single day, no matter how hard you try to do the right thing?
It's possible that addressing both the ADHD and the self-esteem issues caused by the ADHD will help her with emotional regulation.
Hello I have never heard of dmdd but my daughter has adhd and odd. She was on tenex and vyvance at the same time. It worked for a little bit but then her Dr took her off the tenex and put her on intuniv and vyvance and that seemed to help a lot more
