After keeping a really detailed symptom diary I've noticed that I seem to struggle with horrid bloating, back pain (like early labour back pain), hip tightness/Pain, right leg pain, lower tummy pain and right flank pain up to my ribs as my period is finishing/after its finished and the during and after ovulation.......meaning I get about 3-6 days respite from this pain a month. I would go as far to say that I can cope with the intense cramping on days 1/2/3 of my period better than the other pain I described. Does anyone else feel like this!?!? I'm now on day 7 of my cycle with very light bleeding and this pain started rearing its ugly head again yesterday. Am I alone in this??
Thanks in advance ladies.....Gill xx

Omg yes!!!!! This has just started happening to me in the last 3 or so months and I have no idea why!!!! As you said I can now cope with the horrific 1-3 days of period pain more than the pain I get in my proliferative phase!! I have an mri booked for tomorrow so I will be very interested with those results to understand why this is happening How so very strange!
Hope your mri gives you some answers. Unfortunately mine didn't. However a recent transvaginal ultrasound picked up an irregular junctional zone indicating adeno. I think I might have quite a high pain threshold - I was 7cm dilated before I realised I was in labour (Just thought my back was aching from the weight of my pregnant belly 🙄). Really hope you get some answers and a plan can be put in place to help you feel better. It really is rotten. 🤗 xx
Hello ladies this is my first post! I joined because I’m looking for answers to pain and I came across your post Gill and I completely understood what you’re saying. I get painful period on day 123 and emptying my bowel and peeing during my period is horrendous but I could cope with it if that was all the pain I got. The period goes and on day 7 to at least 18 I get awful pain like everything from the top of my ribs to my lower pelvis is swollen. I feel pressure in my bladder I’m bloated like I’m pregnant it hurts just to sit, stand lie down dunno what to do with myself. I completely understand your pain. I suffer with poly cystic kidney disease and have large kidneys liver and spleen so sometimes I don’t know which pain is which! I had a ct for kidneys which showed possible adenomyosis in my womb but my GP hasn’t referred me to gynaecologist he is just treating the pain. Can I ask how you treat your pain and are you under a gynaecologist?
Morning! Sorry to hear that you're suffering so much. 🤗I use
-a wrap around hot water bottle (as got as I can get it),
-rub deep heat (seems that's my new fragrance 🙈),
-ovira tens machine,
-paracetamol/ibuprofen (I have stronger stuff but haven't take it yet)
-i also do everything I can to take my mind off the pain/discomfort.
I'm also having acupuncture and physio on my hip/pelvis due to sacroliotic joint dysfunction.
I tried the merina coil which can be really effective but unfortunately it didn't agree with me.
I am under a private gynae. The next step for me would be chemically induced menopause for 3 months. Terrifies me. I had a massive flare up over Dec/Jan and then i would've done anything to get rid of the pain and horrendous bloating. But it seems to have calmed down a little and now I'm not so sure. Xx
Thanks for replying Gill 😊 I can empathise with keeping busy to get your mind off pain I try to do the same and I won’t give in and let it beat me! You seem to have a good strategy in place for dealing with it and I think when you try to help yourself it’s like the pain hasn’t won and your in control? The joint pain in your back is that either side? Is this caused by the condition? I get pain in my back which feels it’s right in my joint almost feels bruised to touch is this like your pain? I’ve never associated the two. How were you diagnosed with adenomyosis? X x sorry if I’m firing questions at you lol !! X
No need to apologise! I've had every investigation under the sun. My most recent transvaginal ultrasound picked up an irregular junctional zone which indicates adeno apparently. Also, my gynae "diagnosed" me based on my symptoms, my age and the fact I've had a c-section.
My joint pain is mainly right sided, but I do get it on both sometimes. I exercise alot (to take mind off pain) - and my body doesn't like doing it on my tiled floor via zoom so I think that's one of the reasons I've damaged myself. However, my right sided pain is also def gynae related. I wouldn't necessarily say it feels bruised to touch - but tender.
Please feel free to ask anything or vent! It's good to know that you're not alone - or teetering on the edge of madness! 🤪 x
I do feel mad sometimes!! Thank you 😊 I have had a c section too!? I was diagnosed with endometriosis a year or two after it and treated with laser and a mirena coil was put it which worked for about 3 years but I then got chronic thrush every month when I should’ve had a period so it was removed. It sort of lost its magic too pain relief wise. I wonder if I should push for a gynaecologist referral? As it was a kidney scan that said possible adenomyosis. Not sure why GP doesn’t want to he says the only way to treat any chronic pelvic pain is with pain medication? I’m glad you can exercise I can do some exercises but I’m bit limited due to kidney pain. Size wise it’s like being pregnant feeling crowded in my abdomen. Gill can I ask when you get your pain after your period when it goes right up to your ribs do you ever get pain in your diaphragm area? And pain when taking a deeper breath? I get this pain cyclically where it feels like a band around my diaphragm and back and I find it hard to eat and pain when taking a deeper breath. I dunno if it’s kidney referred pain or gynae related? This is when I feel mad 🤪 when I’m in pain but need to know why and what’s causing it. Xx
Yes! I absolutely get that exact pain! But....I thought it might be reflux related as I was diagnosed with GERD a couple of years ago and I've noticed that my reflux gets worse around the end of my period (Or as it's getting lighter....My periods have been about 14 days a month recently) I'm coming up 44 and I also think I'm in early stages of perimenopause causing me all sorts of weird issues!
The crowded feeling is an excellent description. I kinda think it feels like everything is all out of place, angry and inflamed. Like something is jamming up against your ribs and organs.
Unless you are very lucky, GPs don't really understand adeno - or have barely heard of it. Unfortunately there's not much in the way of treatment out there for adeno, but it may be wise to asked to be referred to a gynae who can then give you your options.
I'm sorry to hear that your kidneys cause you so much pain. Big hugs x
Thank you ☺️ it feels so good to have someone who understands the same pain 😄 none of my family or friends experience anything like what we go through. Yes the reflux thing my Gp prescribed some pills for me but I did explain I don’t actually get the reflux thing or burning just like my food won’t go down or if I bend it’s like it’s coming back up again !! 14 day period sounds horrendous and must make you feel exhausted. I do pass clots on first few days of mine do you? I’m coming up 45 and my periods are still regular it’s just the hormone thing can be awful 😞 one minute happy next like I’m gonna murder someone 😂 then crying at the drop of a hat next just can’t face talking to anyone! I do feel for my family I can’t be the easiest to put up with. Thanks again for your honesty and help Gill already I feel I’m not alone xx
I don't get the burning either-but I notice it coming back up during the night. Horrid. Been told this is silent reflux 🤷🏻♀️. Feel like it's become worse over the past few months. It doesn't affect my swallow, but I can sometimes feel like I've got a pea in my throat (globus sensation) but there's nothing there! When I was younger, my food would get stuck in my gullet alot when I was stressed.
The clots the first few days are highly unpleasant. Sometimes the size of pingpong balls and you can feel them come out. I'm very heavy my first few days then i tend to be medium/light for about another week, then spotting for the rest. Still regular too just wish they didn't last so long!
You sound so like me with the hormones! Feel like the Tasmanian devil most of the time. And like you, I feel so bad for my wee family!
No need to thank me- I haven't done anything! I'm an open book, so feel free to ask me anything. You can always private message me too. X
I was just reading what you stated, that you might have the chemically induced menopause.
I would really be appreciative to know if you do go ahead with that and how you get on with it. I’ve been thinking about that myself, however, I haven’t discussed this yet with my Drs.
I’m sure I’ve read that there’s some meditation that Drs Can give you, to induce the menopause, because that’s just what I need. I’m not wanting to wait another 8 years in agony, for my menopause. I can’t wait for the menopause it can’t come soon enough😬
Just like yourselves, I suffer with Adenomyosis, for years now, on and off for 20 years, my pain now is agonising and excruciating at times. It goes from intense pain to not so strong and it just really hurts and it can also be very subtle and terrible bloating. I get pain in my pelvic area and the pain radiates into my lower back.
I waddle about as if I’m about to give birth but alas no baby at the end of the pain 👶
The pain can be with me for weeks or days but it does eventually subside, which is such a relief, I’m totally euphoric!! 😅
I do get breaks from time to time, usually a weeks break, mine is very random. I never know when it’s going to hit me.
I’m struggling with gynaecologists, at the moment, they’re saying it’s not adenomyosis that’s causing my pain and it must be something else but there is nothing else wrong with me. I’ve had quite a few ultrasounds.
I’m taking morphine 10 mg twice a day, naproxen, Pregabalin and Nortriptyline for my pain but when the pain builds up and becomes intense, no pill seems to work.
I use hot and cold therapy - hot water bottles and cold compress. I also use Biofreeze . I’ve used my tens machine but that just hurts me even more.
I’ve tried everything I can think of. So far.
I’d just also like to say, you’re not alone.
I’ve been advised to go private from other ladies, that have had no luck with getting any help from GPs and gynaecologists on the NHS.
I was advised to try and find a surgeon that is NHS and private and get a hysterectomy, because they say there is no cure apart from a hysterectomy.
I don’t know if that’s what you’ve been advised too.
I’ve been refused a hysterectomy by my gynaecologist, as They said they don’t want to put me through such a severe operation, when they don’t think it’s adenomyosis that’s causing my pain.
Plus, I should wait for the menopause as I’m the right age now and then it should go away.
I’ve just been prescribed, (three months ago) Provera , a progesterone pill. I take tree times a day, which has stopped the sporadic bleeding, however the pain hasn’t stopped. And they said that it should have stopped my pain if it stopped the bleeding.
I have looked at going private but I can’t afford, nearly four grand. I haven’t worked for over 8 years, due to this pain as I was sacked from my long term job because of all my sick leave.
I hope you all find better pain relief. And don’t suffer too much.
I just wanted u all to know that you’re not alone and I’m always here, if you fancy a chinwag and your feeling fed up because of the pain.
I might not answer straight away but I will eventually.
