Bloodshot eyes

This is probably a silly question, but does anybody know whether bloodshot eyes are a side-effect of blood thinners? It's probably just pink eye or conjunctivitis, but you know how everything is related when you're still fairly recently diagnosed....

I can't really say if it is a side effect but I have been taking warfarin for three and a half years and not had blood shot eyes. Maybe worth a quick ask in the pharmacy or a call to your GP if you are worried. It's not much help but I hope it clears soon.

I think it can be related to anticoagulant meds....bleed more easily.

The other two possibilities you mention have other symptoms as well.

Worth getting inr checked and talk to doctors on phone or at least check with a pharmacist?

Hi Hidden

I take warfarin daily as I have had recurrent dvts.

Last year I had a sensation of like a lacy veil come down over my eye and my eye became very bloodshot.Ny eyesight in that eye was very cliudy I coukdnt make out shapes.Doc teferred me to hospital and it turned out I had a haemorrage in my eye .It eventually cleared up on its own within about 6 weeks.

Strangely on 4 th jan this year I woke i the morning and my husband said what ave you dobe to your eye.I was still in bed so I hadnt had a chance to do anything. He oassed m a mirror IMG I couldn't believe it.My eye looked like someone had stabbed me in it,There was a great huge jelly like pieve of gunged up blood hanging from it.

Went to dics she said it was a conjunctival haemorrhage.Referred me to hosputal but they said it didnt need hospital treatment. So was sent to a local optician where they prescribed me drops and was told to leave it alone it would clear on iits own !!!!??????

If it was no better in a month to go back -- not entirely pleased with that but nothing I could do.

Doc told me that although it looked a lot more serious the conjunctival haemorrage was not as dangerous as the first one but it turns out that they were both due to an imbalance in the warfarin levels in my body

The second one I think was because I missed an INR checking date over xmas and so was taking a higher dose than I should have been .Not sure about the first.

So from my experience I would say its very possible that its from blood thinning meds.

Any unexplained bleeding from any part of the body should be checked out if ir causes you concern as it may be another underlying condition causing the problem.

Hope you get sorted soon.

Thanks, all. I'm actually on rivaroxaban, not Warfarin, so they don't check you so often. Pretty certain this is only pink eye - soothing drops are really helping!

Hi, I've been on Warfarin since 1999 for AF (and in 2011 left subclavian vein DVT, thought to have been body reaction to Pacemaker leads!).

Anyway, often coinciding with INR at or above my 3 target, I get occasional bloodshot eyes - left or right. Medics say it is not uncommon with Warfarin. NB there is no blurred vision and only very slight discomfort on blinking. Regards TC

I have been taking Apixaban 5mg X 2 per day since May and sometimes get bloodshot and tired looking eyes. I am trying not to worry about this as I have read the leaflet that comes with the medication and it warns one to contact the hospital if there is bleeding in the eyes. So, I "keep an eye" on my eye whites and should the bloodshot veins get dramatic, I will be going to the hospital.
