I've used Ovestin for quite a few years now. I've had no side effects. I was taken off HRT patches as I had pre-stage breast cancer. But I've been assured by several doctors, including a very well-respected Consultant, that creams such as Ovestin do not cause side effects like HRT pills/ patches, as it is such a tiny amount of the hormone. But because creams are officially an HRT product, they still have to list all the side effects you could get get from the pills/ patches. I wouldn't have been allowed Ovestin if it could've givne me side effects associated with the higher dose pills/patches. Hope this makes sense!!

You're welcome. Ovestin has stopped all the symptoms I had (why do we end up with so many problems; I'm coming back as a man!!)

It can't be very strong systemically though, as I've still got my hot flushes, and they'd gone when I had HRT patches. If you can understand that. It's just been good for what it says it's supposed to do, for me anyway.

The thing is I'm 68 and have been lucky not to suffer with hot flushes and such, but have now got pain and they say it's vaginal astropy and have prescribed the ovestin for the pain, so hope it works. I'm definitely with you on coming back as a man, thankyou again for the reassurance I really appreciate it.

Aha, I'm just a few months behind you, and your symptoms sound very familiar. Atrophy, eh? They make us sound like shrivelled prunes :-( The full HRT patches stopped all my flushes etc and I could sleep well, but that went out of the window 10 years ago, when I had to give up the patches. Have been on Ovestin for about 8 years I think, and no problems at all. The leaflet says use twice a week, but the consultant said it's so non-problematical you could use it every day. So that sort of tells its own story. I use it about every other day. Good luck!

Can you buy it OTC or is it prescription only?

I'm sure it's prescription only. I've seen some advertised on Ebay!! But I think it's advisable to get it from a doctor as it is essentially HRT - in a 'mild' form.

Thank you. I agree, eBay isn't the place to buy medication!

I don't think I had any side effects. But I guess everyone is different. And it certainly stopped all the symptoms I had.I'd been very uncomfortable for months, and that all disappeared.

It's just I used it last night and felt like my head was in a vice, just wondered if it'll blow over the more I use it, but appreciate not everyone's the same, thankyou though.

I got headaches on Ovestin.

However I have read and heard that you can use a fraction of the dose recommended and not to use it high in the vagina but just smear on the outside and a little smear on the inside.

So I have started using it this way at about 1/6 of the dose daily. So far so good.
