Hi weightogo,

Briefly:

Cons - it does take some effort, commitment (to yourself, your body and your health and wellbeing) and a bit of perseverence.

Pros - losing weight, feeling fitter, reducing a range of health risks, taking contol of your eating and activity/exercise levels, making a change from poor lifestyle habits, not getting into being a yo-you dieter. This is probably more about long term change than just a temporary 'quick-fix'. (The 'quick fix' might help you get into those jeans you used to wear, but it's not particularly good for your health). And it's all free!

Read around the NHSChoices live well lose weight pages, there's lots of good free advice on there, including a BMI calculator and the free 12 week plan. Also read around these blogs you'll find plenty of advice from people actualy riding the weight loss bus.

If you have prevailing medical issues you are well advised to discuss with your GP of practice nurse if they would impinge upon your weight loss regime and vice versa.

Otherwise, get on the weight loss bus.

Sorry weightogo, I'm not sure I really answered the question.

I kind of think what you were really asking was 'why should I do the 12 week plan'?

Well I can only answer that from my case. I started this journey at 106.1 kgs on 11/1/13. The top of normal BMI for me is 26kgs less than that. (I'm now at 97.1 kgs and I've still got 17 kgs to go.)

Now imagine the chillers in Tesco's or wherever and visualise 52 x 500g of Flora or whatever spread. Imagine having to carry that around with you all day, every day.

Now I have to ask a question - does carrying that additional load around stress me out?

The answer is YES - that load stresses my body out and in order to cope with that extra load my body changes the way it functions in many different ways. One way it does this - at a sub-conscious level - is it slows down and avoids effort and activity which results in me becoming less fit and less able to be fit. As my activity levels go down, so my muscles through non-use go down to match, And because I'm not using my joints as I should be, they begin to become less and less mobilised. And on, and on. Carrying that extra load around just is not an efficient way to run a human body.

And THAT's probably the real reason for doing it. What's the alternative? Just keep piling on the weight? Keep stressing your body out more and more? Continue getting less and less able to be active and mobile? What sort of quality of life am I lining myself up for?

So, don't think of it as changing to something. You're going home to the way your body ought to be working. To having a fitter, more efficient, better operating body that will serve you so much better and feel a great deal better to live in.

Hi Doikosp

Thank you so much for your reply. You have done really well and are an inspiration. You come across very motivational too. The 12 week plan is as you say the start of the rest of my life.

I will be starting Week 1 officially on Monday ( it just seems most people start at the beginning a week) I will be starting counting calories and watching what I eat from today though! There is no time like the present.

Thanks again.

Josie
