Pasta Rollercoaster

I confirmed two things this week:

1. You miss a lot of learning opportunities if you only weigh yourself once a week.

My weekly weigh-ins have hovered around 181 lb for the last few weeks but my actual weight has fluctuated by almost 6 lb !!

As usual, I'm relaxed about this because the moving average keeps me sane and I know that my real weight hasn't changed that much. The gain is mostly temporary water weight and I know the culprit…

2. It's the pasta!

My wife made pasta three days in a row and my weight shot up! It's kind of ironic: a month ago I blamed my weight gain on my wife being away (and me going to the pub to eat). Now I'm blaming her for coming back and cooking me pasta! ;-) I'm doing the cooking this weekend!

I remember, back in the 70s, my older sisters being really picky about drinking skimmed milk and having trace amounts of margarine on their toast (no butter!).

They would freak out if there was the slightest amount of fat on their meat and chicken. My dad always said "Fat doesn't make you fat" and everyone laughed at him for being so stupid. It's only now that we are realizing that he was right.

Why did it take the world so long to learn this lesson? How many people have been missing out on delicious butter and cream and full fat milk and bacon and steak and olive oil when it was "healthy" pasta and bread making us fat all this time?

More importantly, how can I persuade my wife that bread and pasta makes me gain weight so quickly? She freaks out when I cook with olive oil but always has bread with everything.

Maybe give your wife this to read healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh... then she will see why bread and pasta need to be restricted

It's funny how ideas get so embedded into a culture that they become "obvious" or "common sense". We've been told for 50 years that fat makes us fat. So we all cut out the fat and replaced it with pasta, rice, skimmed milk, and low-fat-everything. Result? We're all fatter than ever. Clearly, there's something a bit wrong somewhere - but people still believe that fat makes you fat.

At least more and more people (like yourself) are looking closely at what actually happens in reality, instead of paying attention to neat-sounding theories about calories. One day soon, perhaps, we'll turn this around!

Now I maintain I ditch the scales but when I started I think I needed my weekly weigh in for motivation and guidance . I don't eat pasta but will have the odd slice of wholemeal toast . I don't ban anything but eat things that we all know impact in moderation .

3X per week pasta though and I would be bored too .

I tried going without scales when I hit my target about 10 years ago but the weight crept up without me noticing. I need the scales even when maintaining.

I know what you mean ...I do weigh but not every week at on the dot times .

Bread is a killer for me if I want to lose weight. Lean meat and lot of fruit and veg is the way forward for me.

I live making overnight oats and porridge is great.

I miss living with my mum when she would have fresh porridge ready for me before I went to school x
