I wouldn't recommend it - it's a good thing to build some lean muscle.

Muscle is good. Muscle helps you burn more calories and boosts your metabolism. ( and makes you stronger).

When you lose weight and don't exercise u tend to lose a little muscle but muscle isn't a bad thing so don't worry about it

It's just it annoying as its not making me lose weight on my legs etc if u know what I mean

I recommend doing stretches. My body also tends to send all my weight to my legs, and I do now have very muscly legs having lost the excess weight (although they're definitely slimmer too). Because I know my body has this tendency, I worked really hard to stretch my muscles out as the muscle toned up. Look on the NHS site for stretch exercises. E.g. Just touch your toes (or as far as you can manage) for 30 seconds every day. This won't make you 'lose' muscle, but it will help you control how it forms and give you the best chance of having lean muscular legs at the end of your weight loss. Hope that helps :)

Use body measurements rather than weight. This will show fat loss as opposed to muscle gain.

Dear Emma,

Training for the marathon, then? What you might find if you are exercising to training level every day is that you lose inches rather than weight. If you want to lose weight more than inches, train every other day and give those muscles the chance to recover and release the water they hold onto to protect themselves while you are building them.

At least that's what a very qualified trainer at my gym explained to me. He was right. I didn't lose weight for a whole month. But losing 2 dress sizes, I still thought I had won. Tape measure out, if you haven't got the size testing jeans in the wardrobe!

I suspect your lovely sounding partner is trying to encourage you to keep going and he is probably partly right. If anyone was mad enough to want to lose leg muscle, the answer is simple, take to your bed. The inactivity would damage the rest of your health but your muscle would degenerate and look like fat again. You probably would not lose size, just look flabby. Keep going, you are going in the right direction. The results you want are ahead of you.

What a sweetie he sounds. Aren't you lucky to have such support at home? I am so impressed with your exercise. I'm a couch potato at the moment and not from choice. But I have to save the days when I feel OK for maintaining the house, life etc. As there are so few of them. Still even at my best I am not sure I managed 800 kcal burnt in a day. It might be worth changing the type of exercise you do every other day. Maybe going for a relaxing swim. Just to give your muscles a change. But do measure your thighs and calves. Or try some boots or tight trousers you haven't worn for a while as I would bet you've lost inches.

Not what you're looking for?
