Bleeding burgers

Hi everyone,

I saw the article below and it made me wonder what other fellow vegans/ plant based eaters think about the idea of bleeding burgers and the such. Also about vegan foods being put in the meat aisles of supermarkets. A friend of mine bought a pork product that was clearly in the vegetarian section of the supermarket. Not only did she buy it she ate it. She complained to the supermarket but I haven’t heard the out come yet.

Would you like to eat a bleeding burger or does it put you off that it’s trying to replicate a dead animal or do you see it as progress and it’s plant based and that’s all that matters.

By the way, there is no wrong or right answer in my book. I’m just interested to hear others opinions.🙂

Hi Ali

Personally I don't like the idea of bleeding burgers, when I used to eat meat I never liked the blood anyway i.e. rare steak. I honestly don't think Vegan food needs to imitate meat. I think that if I bought a shop Vegan burger and it started to bleed then it would put me off eating it.

Good post to get people's views on this. :)

Very interesting Ali, for me personally there is no chance of me eating/buying a burger that bleeds but maybe this is to encourage meat eaters to change over. I don't agree with meat and veggie food being close by/in the same freezer - its a big no no.

Your poor friend eating the product, I hope she gets a result from the supermarket.

Have you seen the meatless butcher products in the fridge - they are always reduced because they are bright pink and look just like meat 🤢

Best wishes

Debs

Thank you for your comments Debs. Yes, I have seen those products and they don’t appeal to me either.

Or anyone else by the looks of it, always reduced! even then people don't seem to be buying it

It’s interesting that all these funny things have come out this year. I wonder what the vegan fad will be next year. I suppose most of us make our own food as in the past we’ve had to as there were not many vegan options and we’ve got used to it so that’s probably the best way to continue as everything else is processed. I think some people think if it’s vegan it’s bound to be healthy.

Thats a very good point - what will be be next year, if we are going down the bleeding burgers root, I hate to think. Of course its not just about convenience its about health and this processed vegan food has so much in it, so I think on the whole I will be still cooking 😀

For myself, no thank you, Agoodenough. 🙏 😌 [Personally, I’m not into seeing anything I bite into "bleed" — except perhaps for a juicy red strawberry 🍓 or pomegranate 😋. . . (A trip to the phlebotomists 💉 satisfies any ‘blood lust". 😝 🤪 🤣 ) ]

.

As for folks who wish to transition to plant-based 🌿 , if a bit of faux dripping ‘blood’ 💧 tantalises people 🧛🏻‍♀️ to eat a plant-based burger 🍔 , all the more power to them. 👍👍

Whatever it takes!! 😃 👍👍

Faux "transition foods" blessedly 👼 serve their purpose.

[Oh, I’ve no problem sitting down with carnivores (2-legged 🧛🏻‍♂️ or 4-legged 🐈 🐕 🐊 ) enjoying their 🥩 🍖 🍗 meal. No judgement here. ☺️ 🙏 🍀 🌺 🌞 ]

.

As for ‘meat/ dairy aisle’ — seeing rows upon rows of carcasses 🥩 🥩 🥓 🥓 🍖 🍖 🍗 🍖 🍣 🍣 & by products 🥚 🥚 🥛 🥛 🧀 🧀 🍨 🍨 🍦 🍦 & grasping the suffering of these creatures 🐄 🐂 🐏 🐖 🐓 🦃 🐟 en masse — is difficult, very difficult. Seeing the ‘backstory’ & knowing what I now know. I turn my head in sadness 😥 , disgust 😣 , shame 😔 , & guilt 😞 for unconscious (oblivious) past choices. [Once we see/ know something, we can’t unsee/ unknow it. 😞 . . . Consciousness raising/ "awareness" has its downside. 😔 . . . "Ignorance is bliss". (Petty "1st-world" problems that hungry, starving, undernourished 💀 people would love to have . . . Apologies all round . . . 🙏 😔 )]

I had a 'bleeding' burger in a restaurant when they first came out. I think it's a gimmick to try and tempt meat eaters, and I didn't mind it because it just looked and tasted like beetroot juice but If it really had looked and tasted like 'blood' I'd have been repulsed.

I had a real problem eating the vegan pizza at pizza express with jackfruit that looked like meat, it just put me right off.

The idea of putting vegan products in the meat isle is repugnant, and I hope there an uproar that gets them to reconsider. However I understand why they do it, it's all about the profits. The market for non vegans buying the occasional meat free product is larger than the number of dedicated vegans.

So it's a dilemma, as vegans we benefit from the increased choices and options that gives us, we just need to remember these companies are not doing it because they share our ethical values, they just see a market.

Absolutely. I think your final paragraph sums it up. As jens58 says you're best to just stick to wholefood plant based. The market has been flooded over the last year with vegan junk.

Hi Ali, they're Franken foods which I find repugnant. 🤢 But if its what meat eaters need to try something different then I guess it has a place.

That’s true. From the comments on here from vegans it would appear anything that looks like meat is unappealing. So yes if a meat eater eats it then it does have its place in the market. I wonder how popular it is with meat eaters though. 🤷🏻‍♀️

No bleeding burgers for me ! I don't like the idea of all the meat etc replicas that are coming onto the supermarket shelves. It's still processed food and not healthy. Better off sticking to WFPB as much as possible.

I personally wouldn’t like it 🤢 funnily enough I had a vegan burger yesterday lunchtime in a pub and it was so meat like (from what I can remember) that I was beginning to wonder if they had made a mistake but when my meat eating other half tried it he said “that is definitely not meat”.

I think they are trying to tempt meat eaters into buying more vegan food and that’s why they put it with the meat. I don’t suppose many meat eaters go down the vegan aisle so they wouldn’t see it there. Maybe they could put it in both places then we wouldn’t have to buy it with meat juices on the packaging and meat eaters would be tempted into trying it because it would be by the meat.

Hi, that’s a good point and if more meat eaters eat vegan food the production will be higher and maybe the price will come down. I know what you mean it’s hard to enjoy it if you think they have forgotten you’ve asked for the vegan option and given you meat instead. Ali

I agree with pretty much everyone's comments, which I have to say is refreshing. There are few, if any, other forums that I could say that about. Vegans unite!

Hi,

It’s processed food, it uses industrial soy and GMO yeast. It contains wheat which is a no for people who are ill. Maybe twice a year if you must, if you find yourself eating it very frequently then you probably need to reassess why you are vegan.

I guess some people want a straight swop. Sausage for vegan sausage, burger for plant based burger etc. If it's a start to eating plant based and not eating meat I suppose it has it's place but it's not healthy. The worrying thing is I think some people eat all this stuff and feel unwell and tired and then wrongly blame it on being vegan. Thank you for your reply. It's good to get everyone's thoughts. 😊
